Don't consider myself the best, I am just another footballer: Lionel Messi

The eternal argument of who is better Ronaldo or Messi has been given extra spice ahead of this summer's World Cup

The match against Israel was set to be Argentina's final warm-up game before the start of the World Cup on June 14.

It has been claimed that "threats and provocations" had been made against the Blaugrana star, with some supporters even asking fans to burn Messi shirts if he did take part.

The Palestinians opposed the decision to hold the match in Jerusalem, accusing Israel of seeking to use the event, and especially the presence of global star Messi, to underpin Israel's claim to the Holy City.

It was a change of tone from Rajoub, who on Sunday had called for Palestinians to burn replica Messi shirts and photos if the Argentinian team played in Jerusalem. Let us know in the comments section below.

Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub on Wednesday called the cancellation of the Israel-Argentina football friendly in Jerusalem a "red card" for Israel.

"Messi is a symbol of peace and love", Rajoub said. However, Guatemala and Honduras followed the United States head in moving their embassies last month.

The Argentina Football Association did not immediately comment on the reports.

Meanwhile, Israeli opposition MKs said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev were to blame for Argentina's cancellation.

A friendly football match between Argentina and Israel in Jerusalem has been cancelled, according to Argentine media, a PLO spokesperson and an Argentinian striker.

England's Dele Alli booed by Nigeria fans at Wembley
In the game against Congo, we didn't play our best team, but we will change things against England and play our best players. Nigeria's next game is against the Czech Republic in Austria before they depart for Russian Federation .

The cancellation came hours after pro-Palestinian activists staged a demonstration in front of the sports complex in Barcelona where Argentina are preparing ahead of the World Cup.

He said: "From a sporting point of view, I would have preferred to play in Barcelona".

Last month, US President Donald Trump stirred worldwide anger and condemnation with a decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognising the city as the capital of Israel.

Israel lays claim to the whole Jerusalem al-Quds, but the global community views the city's eastern sector as an occupied territory and Palestinians consider it as the capital of their future state.

The cancellation was seen as a victory for the global Palestinian anti-Israel boycott campaign.

At least 125 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire on the frontier since March 30.

Responding to the news, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel said it welcomed Argentina's decision to cancel.

Argentina's Lionel Messi eyes the ball during the 2018 World Cup football qualifier match against Ecuador in Quito, on October 10, 2017.
