Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses: U.S. special counsel

President Donald Trump asserted his presidential power and escalated his efforts to discredit the special counsel Russia probe Monday declaring he has the “absolute right” to pardon himself

In a court filing on Monday, prosecutors working for the special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, said Manafort and an associate "repeatedly" attempted to contact witnesses using his phone and an encrypted messaging application.

In court documents, including an affidavit by Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Brock Domin, prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller allege Manafort and his associate tried to contact the two witnesses by phone and through an encrypted messaging program.

The two witnesses are not named in court filings. "As only one of two people left who could become President, why wouldn't the Federal Bureau of Investigation or Department of "Justice" have told me that they were secretly investigating Paul Manafort", he asked.

They have asked federal judges to revise or revoke his terms of release meaning the President's former campaign manager could face imprisonment until his trial.

Manafort is the most senior member of Trump's campaign to be indicted, though the charges do not relate to campaign activities.

In February, the 69-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering, illegal lobbying and lying, setting up the first trial to result from Mueller's investigation, due to begin on September 17. A spokesman for Manafort says his client and his lawyers are reviewing the filing.

In fact, they are kids who are enmeshed in a federal system that has long had to deal with the children of immigrants. It has also been argued that some sponsors, possibly relatives, may be blocking attempts to reach the children.

Manafort reportedly called one of the witnesses to give him a "heads up" about the Hapsburg group, but the witness wisely chose to hang up. "I have made clear that [the Hapsburg group] worked in Europe". Early in the case, after he was released to his home, they investigators said they intercepted emails showing Manafort helped write an opinion piece defending his actions that ran in a Ukrainian publications.

The message was accompanied by a link to a Business Insider story with the headline: "Former European leaders struggle to explain themselves after Mueller claims Paul Manafort paid them to lobby for Ukraine".

The Manaforte confidante, referred to as Person A, then told the second potential witness he wanted to reach Person D1 "to brief him on what's going on".

Manafort and an associate allegedly reached out to a pair of public relations people who were linked to an alleged conspiracy by Manafort and others to illegally lobby on behalf of Ukraine in the United States.

Court papers also accuse Person A of making several attempts to influence the witnesses' testimony in February and later in April.

After another minute, prosecutors say he sent yet another message: "If you have a chance to mention this to [Person D1]. - it would be great".
