Justin Trudeau: Donald Trump's comments on Canadian steel industry 'insulting'

The comments come just after finance ministers from seven of the world's largest economies gathered in Canada over the weekend for what's known as the G7 summit. U.S. allies will outline their retaliatory trade measures in the coming days.

After the Whistler meeting, the attending finance officials agreed on the need to take "decisive action" on the tariffs issue at the upcoming G7 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec.

In a rare show of division among the club of wealthy nations, the six other G7 member countries issued a statement calling on asking U.S. treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin to convey their "unanimous concern and disappointment" about the tariffs to Trump.

"The worldwide community is faced with significant economic and security issues, which are best addressed through a united front from G7 countries", the statement said.

Trump this week enacted his administration's most severe economic penalties against US allies to date, establishing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

"When you're nearly 800 billion dollars a year down on Trade, you can't lose a Trade War", he tweeted Saturday.

Germany, by far the biggest exporter to the United States, is keen to avoid a wider trade war, especially as the Trump administration has floated the prospect of tariffs on cars, which would potentially be devastating to German exporters.

"It has been a tense and tough G-7".

"Nearly 90 percent of companies in this survey said that the tariff impact would result in increasing costs and prices, a negative impact on their business or worker layoffs and a loss of business", said Melvin Torres, director of western hemisphere trade at the World Trade Center Arkansas.

Speaking with reporters at the White House, Trump said America's neighbors are "two very different countries" that perhaps should no longer be governed by the same trade rules. "It was not... We believe in the G7, it's an important group", Mr Mnuchin said at his own news conference. You still massively outweigh us, a moose is even-tempered and strong.

Mnuchin disagreed, saying there was support for dealing with China's joint venture requirements, technology transfer efforts and other policies, as Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross began trade talks in Beijing on Saturday.

"We have been attacked by those tariffs".

Shortly before the G-7 meeting ended, Trump tweeted that "the United States must, at long last, be treated fairly on trade".

On Thursday the White House said the exemptions were being lifted because no satisfactory arrangement had been reached.

"This is a trade dispute, if you will". The International Monetary Fund projects the world economy will grow this year and next at its fastest pace since 2011 and Morneau's statement did give a nod to the expansion.

That condition "makes no sense", the Canadian leader said Sunday.

"So what you are saying to us and to all of your North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies is that we somehow represent a national security threat to the United States", Freeland said.
