Facebook kills troubled 'trending' topics feature

Facebook is discontinuing its troubled

Hardiman said that Facebook will remove the trending section next week. The company is also funding news videos, created exclusively for Facebook by outside publishers it would not yet name.

Facebook, ever eager avoid the liability that comes with being a publisher, said there was no bias.but nonetheless allowed that it "could not fully exclude the possibility of isolated improper actions or unintentional bias in the implementation of our guidelines or policies".

The Trending feature introduced four years ago listed stories buzzing on Facebook at any given time. Facebook eventually fired the editors on the trending team, replacing them with an automated process.

Facebook said it is working with 80 publishers in Australia, Europe, India, and the Americas on a "Breaking News" label to adorn posts in News Feed. Instead, the software algorithm began to pick out posts that were getting the most attention, even if the information in them was bogus. The idea was that coverage by just one outlet could be a sign that the news is fake.

And so further commitments to change were made, "to restore any loss of trust in the Trending Topics feature", from the bias that Facebook couldn't find.

The problems underscore the difficulty of relying on computers, or even AI, to make sense of the messy human world without committing obvious, sometimes embarrassing and occasionally disastrous errors. "So we're exploring new ways to help people stay informed about timely, breaking news that matters to them, while making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources".

Barcelona icon Lionel Messi never considered representing Spain over Argentina
Messi, who joined Barca as a 13-year-old, would have already won a World Cup if he defected to Spain as a teenager. Argentina face Haiti on Tuesday night and Israel on June 9 in their two friendly matches ahead of the World Cup.

"Breaking news has to look different than a recipe", Hardiman said. It plans to launch this feature in the next few months.

We'll see if doing away with the Trending section and delivering more meaningful news does anything to improve user trust in Facebook.

Facebook said that the module accounted for less than 1.5% of the clicks to news publishers and that internal research said people found "the product to be less and less useful".

And in almost the same breath, he then went on to admit that Facebook pays to "help produce content" - as it's doing now with these new news videos.

According to the Pew Research Centre, 44% of United States adults get some or all of their news through Facebook.
