Southern US states prepare for Storm Alberto

Alberto disorganized no threat to local area Alberto remains very disorganized Sunday morning

Emergency crews and law enforcement agencies in the Upstate and western North Carolina are warning people ahead of Monday when Subtropical Storm Alberto is expected to make landfall in the Gulf.

This graphic, created by the National Weather Service, shows rainfall potential in the USA gulf region expected from Subtropical Storm Alberto.

Residents can expect gusty wind near the coast, isolated tornados and localized flooding from heavy rainfall, the advisory says. He said Alberto's biggest threat will be its heavy rains, with forecasts of anywhere from four to 12 inches (10-30 centimeters) of rain in some areas. On Saturday evening, a wind gust of 47 miles per hour was reported by the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida.

Other cruise lines which have ships in the area have not yet announced any itinerary changes but of course, will be making sure their ships are not affected by Subtropical Storm Alberto. The main threat is from heavy rain that could lead to flooding, the city said, but also high winds and storm surge could cause problems. As of 2 p.m. ET Sunday, a tropical storm warning is in effect for the area from the middle of Florida's Longboat Key to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Alberto, which is moving north through the Gulf of Mexico, is still categorized as a Subtropical Storm.

Rick Scott (R) also declared a state of emergency in all of the state's 67 counties on Saturday. In the end, it might not be wind and disruption to energy production that the storm is best known for.

Little change in strength is forecast before Alberto reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Storms again are more likely during the afternoon and evening.

As for potential impacts, with a more eastern track of the system, the heaviest rains will likely be seen in East Alabama with the strongest winds up to 35 miles per hour possible in West Alabama Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

The NWS said waves as high as 18 feet could pound the popular Gulf beaches in Baldwin County, Alabama, and northwestern Florida on Monday.

At 1000 PM CDT (0300 UTC), the center of Subtropical Storm Alberto was located near latitude 28.5 North, longitude 85.8 West. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm.

Storms in the Gulf are closely watched because 5 percent of US natural gas and 17 percent of crude-oil production comes out of the region, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Centre Ken Graham said in a video briefing that downpours caused some street flooding.

Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center.
