Ivanka Trump Defends Serena Williams After Being Snubbed by French Open

Williams, a three-time French Open champion, is playing in her first major since giving birth to her daughter in September.

The former world number one will be looking to build on her long-awaited maiden Grand Slam triumph in Melbourne, but she has never reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

As a result of the illness, Williams had to take a long break from tennis.

At Wimbledon, which runs from July 2-15, the All England Club are likely to seed Serena using its unique system that favours grass-court specialists, given she is a seven-time champion.

Simona Halep heads into her favourite Grand Slam as world No. 1 for the first time in her career, having come desperately close to capturing the title in the past.

A potential third round clash with either Julia Goerges or Dominika Cibulkova rounds off a very tough start to the event for the American legend, and it will be interesting to see quite how much her lack of warm-up event preparation will manifest itself as the event starts on Sunday.

Asked to assess her outlook heading into the season's second major, she told reporters: "I think I'm a better player if we compare it to previous year".

M&S to close 100 United Kingdom stores by 2022
The latest wave of closures will affect M&S clothing and home stores, which have underperformed for years. Revenue nudged up 0.7 per cent to £10.7 billion.

The WTA and its players' council are considering such a rule, but French Open organizers also had the chance to seed Williams.

Serena will be playing in her first major tournament since winning last year's Australian Open, having taken time off to give birth to her first child.

The Romanian twice Roland Garros runner-up may be the number one seed but predicting who will be last woman standing in a wide-open draw is akin to Russian Roulette. In my opinion, I said many times, that she's able to come back and to win again tournaments.

"She's someone who the tour was missing, because she's a great champion", Ostapenko said.

"Historically, WTA players have not been supportive of the use of special rankings for seeding purposes", the WTA said in a statement to the Associated Press. 'So, yeah, I definitely think that would be a nice change'.

The topic of whether Williams, who was No. 1 when she announced her pregnancy, should be seeded has been debated throughout the sport for weeks. This move has not gone down too well with fellow female tennis players on WTA tour.

Ivanka Trump is not happy about the way Serena Williams was treated in the lead up to the French Open.
