Moon, Kim Discuss Scrapped Summit as Trump Signals Optimism

Donald Trump says US North Korea summit ‘could’ happen on 12 June

Moon's office said that during their two-hour meeting, the two leaders also discussed carrying out the peace commitments they agreed to at their first summit, held at Panmunjom on April 27, but didn't elaborate.

The summit, the first time a sitting U.S. president had met a North Korean leader, would have focused on ways of denuclearising the Korean peninsula and reducing tensions.

The talks between Mr Trump and Mr Kim, if they were to go ahead, would be focused on ways of denuclearising the Korean peninsula and reducing tensions. "We would like to make known to the U.S. side once again that we have the intent to sit with the USA side to solve problem (s) regardless of ways at any time", he said to his official state media.

Earlier on Twitter, Mr Trump hadcalled the North's reaction "warm and productive" and expressed hope for "long and enduring prosperity and peace". "Only time (and talent) will tell!" the USA president said in a tweet.

However, even if they solve the communications issues, they need to overcome a major sticking point: the U.S. insists that Pyongyang must completely denuclearize.

Trump also seemed to excuse the sabre-rattling North Korea suddenly switched to shifted its tone in recent weeks: "Everybody plays games", Trump said on Friday. Trump described it as a very good news.

"We reiterate to the USA that there is a willingness to sit down at any time, in any way, to solve the problem", Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said in a statement carried by state-run media.

The letter - and reports that Trump dictated the message himself - appeared to suggest that diplomacy was still on the table, and that the future of negotiations rested on the shoulders of North Korea. But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said an advance team of White House and U.S. State Department officials would leave for Singapore on schedule this weekend to prepare for a possible summit there.

She referred to Vice President Mike Pence as a "political dummy" for his earlier comments on North Korea and said it was up to the Americans whether they would 'meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown'.

Trump suggested the two sides were again speaking after an abrupt silence from North Korea prompted United States officials to worry.

Mr Trump said on Friday that Washington was having "productive talks" with Pyongyang about reinstating the June 12th meeting, just a day after cancelling it.

Overnight, North Korea released a statement reiterating its interest in talks, even as it acknowledged the relationship between Washington and Pyongyang had deteriorated.

"It was a very nice statement they put out".

Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea appreciated Trump for having made the bold decision to work toward a summit.

The leaders of North and South Korea met Saturday for the second time in a month amid efforts to get a potential U.S.

Trump sent a letter Thursday canceling the denuclearization talks after North Korean officials insulted Vice President Mike Pence's intelligence and reportedly became unresponsive to the summit planning process. The foreign official, in a dramatic break with the diplomatic tenure of prior talks with USA officials, said that if talks were canceled, the two countries could instead engage in a "nuclear-to-nuclear showdown".

It seems many South Koreans are willing to hold on to their newfound optimism, and give Pyongyang another chance.

In calling off the June 12 summit with Kim, Trump had accused the government in Pyongyang of "open hostility".

For North Korea, denuclearisation means a much more reciprocal agreement.

Hours after releasing the letter he declared, "I really believe Kim Jong-un wants to do what's right".
