Weinstein to surrender in sexual misconduct probe

Harvey Weinstein charged with rape and other abuse charges in sexual assault cases

Film mogul Harvey Weinstein appeared in handcuffs in a NY court on Friday to face charges of rape and other sex crimes against two of the scores of women who have accused him of misconduct, ending his reign as a Hollywood kingpin.

It's been almost eight months since accusations of rape, sex assault and harassment first surfaced against the 66-year-old Weinstein.

Weinstein, 66, was charged with rape, criminal sex act, sexual abuse and sexual misconduct for cases involving two women.

Weinstein, 66, arrived at a NY police station to turn himself in shortly before 7.30 a.m. ET, flanked by uniformed police officers.

However, it is not clear as of now whether the charges, expected on Friday, will include money mishandling allegations.

It was a scene not unlike the red carpet walks he used to do, further highlighting how far he has fallen since dozens of women came forward in the New York Times and the New Yorker to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct. "This is an important day in terms of visibility for all women whose lives have been devastated because of the actions of Harvey Weinstein". CNN reported that prosecutors charged Weinstein with first and third-degree rape in one case and first-degree criminal sex act in another case. Police officials said the arrest and charges stemmed from a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's office. That's common at this stage in a criminal case in NY.

He said: "We can not let the United States flout worldwide law, their behaviour towards Iran is unacceptable". All of the above signatories pledged to honour their commitments under the deal .

Weinstein was arraigned at a New York City courthouse around 9:30am ET. Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment when first contacted about the charges late Friday, but previously said in court paperwork that the allegations that Weinstein forced himself on women were "entirely without merit" and that he never knowingly broke the law. If he wants to travel beyond NY or CT, he has to get approval from the judge.

Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been charged in the U.S. with rape, sex abuse and other crimes against two women.

Asked about the raft of allegations that made Weinstein a symbol of sexual misconduct, Brafman said: "Bad behavior is not on trial in this case".

Evans told The New Yorker in a story published in October that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex during a daytime meeting at his New York office in 2004, the summer before her senior year at Middlebury College. Among them is Rose McGowan, who says Weinstein raped her at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997.

Police detectives set up a sting where the woman recorded herself confronting Weinstein.

"Not in a million years, and one of the hardest conversations I had over and over again with these fearless women was that in addition to the sacrifice they were making in telling this story, they didn't think they would ever be heard if they did take that leap, let alone to see actual accountability", Farrow said.
