Census says Eugene still trailing Salem, population-wise

The Chicago skyline is seen from I-90

Salem - with an estimated population of 169,798 on July 1, 2017 - sits at 151st on the list.

The U.S. city that added the most residents between 2016 and 2017 was San Antonio, which boosted its population by 24,208 people.

The gain here was more than those reported for Irvine, Calif., and Henderson, Nev.; and just behind those recorded for Atlanta, San Diego and Austin, Texas. Phoenix placed second, followed by Dallas, Forth Worth and Los Angeles.

The Mid-Columbia headcount topped 290,000 in 2017, according to a fresh population estimate released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Among cities nationwide, Chicago lost the third-most number of residents in 2017, behind only Baltimore (a loss of 5,310) and St. Louis (a loss of 4,518).

Jacksonville was No. 13 on the list, gaining 11,169 residents between 2016 and 2017 for a total population of 892,062.

With an 8.2 percent increase in population, Frisco's population grew from 163,816 in 2016 to 177,286 in 2017.

What's the biggest obstacle to Trump's summit with Kim Jong Un? Trump
The dovish Moon deployed a tactic frequently used by foreign leaders who meet this most mercurial of presidents: flattery. Nobody knew about the meeting and all of a sudden it was reported that he was in China a second time, he said.

The city population is booming, according to new data.

For years, Texas suburbs have been battling it out at the top of the list of fastest-growing cities. In every year since the last census count, the bureau has estimated at least some incremental growth for the state. The community grew to almost 4,000 residents previous year, up by 12 percent, according to census estimates.

The other villages with the largest one-year gains were Farmingdale, with a population increase of 207, or 2.3 percent, and Rockville Centre, which gained 112 people, for a 0.45 percent increase, according to the estimates.

The Island's small population increases come against a backdrop of census estimates that continue to show the nation's greatest such growth was occurring primarily in the South and West, a decades-old development, experts noted. When looking at percentage change, 10 of the 15 fastest-growing large cities were located in the South, the bureau said. And the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey could affect its population in coming years, said William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"We are definitely bucking the trend here in Owensboro", Candance Brake, president of the Greater Owenboro Chamber of Commerce, said Tuesday.

Giant Los Angeles and relatively small Irvine made the list of the 15 USA cities adding the most residents in the year ended July 1.
