White House senior adviser Jared Kushner has finally been granted permanent security clearance, according to The New York Times.
Charles Phalen, the director of the National Background Investigations Bureau, told lawmakers at a House subcommittee oversight hearing held previous year that he had "never seen that level of mistakes" on a security clearance application than what he had seen from Kushner's original SF-86.
He said the Kushner's application was "properly" submitted, reviewed by numerous career officials and underwent the normal process. His clearance was suspended in February, however, as the White House faced blowback over the Rob Porter scandal.
Lowell said Kushner answered all questions and "is looking forward to continuing the work the president has asked him to do".
Kushner is married to Ivanka Trump, the president's oldest daughter. That meant Kushner was able to see information only at the lower "secret" level, but not highly classified information.
The person familiar with the matter confirmed that Kushner was granted a top-secret clearance.
The White House had blamed the delay on administrative backlogs that normally plague new administrations. At one point, the White House had dozens of employees awaiting permanent clearances before Chief of Staff John F. Kelly ordered an overhaul of the process.
Kushner was one of many Trump administration officials who also worked on the president's campaign to face questioning from Mueller.
Some had expected Kushner might not receive a permanent clearance for the duration of Mueller's investigation.
Kushner's application had been beset by multiple revisions and previously undisclosed contacts with foreign individuals.
Kushner had to file three updates to his national security questionnaire, a form that guides the Federal Bureau of Investigation background check and asks for information about a person's employment history, finances, family, travel and other matters. He updated the form in the spring, listing about 100 contacts, but did not mention the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting he attended with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, Donald Trump Jr., and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
