Thousands gather to remember victims of Manchester attack

Manchester holds mass singalong for arena victims on anniversary of attack

Prince William has paid his respects to the 22 people who lost their lives in last year's bombing at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.

The performance will feature the Manchester Survivors Choir, a group of people who were in attendance on the night of the bombing, and Parrs Wood High School's Harmony Group, whose post-attack tribute went viral previous year and received praise from Grande herself. "I love you with all of me and am sending you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day".

On May 22, 2017, Grande had just left the stage at the Manchester Arena when police say suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated an explosive device, killing 22 people and injuring more than 100 others.

The 24-year-old organised a tribute concert, dubbed "One Love Manchester", which was held at the city's Old Trafford cricket ground on June 4 last year and featured artists that included Liam Gallagher, Little Mix, Coldplay, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry.

Following the violent attack, Miz Grande not only visited with victims in hospitals, but also oversaw the One Love Manchester benefit concert.

The finale was a mass 30-minute communal singalong including Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis, One Day Like This by Elbow, Ariana Grande's One Last Time, Never Forget by Take That and The Beatles' All You Need Is Love.

The atrocity was one of a spate of terrorist attacks to hit Britain past year - the one in Manchester and four in London - that included bombings and deadly violence with vehicles and knives. The video pays tribute to the Manchester bombing victims with the image of a bee, a symbol of the city. "My heart is always going to be in Manchester, always has been and always will be".

The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Joan Hitchen, thanked the emergency responders who helped "bring our Manchester together again". We have at times become complacent to the evil of terrorism in some parts of our community; this is not good enough we should confront this evil and not hesitate to call out the actions of these evil people, their supporters and financial backers.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable were also there.

A larger single lit candle remembered bereaved families and friends, more than 800 who were injured, those who helped on the night and those who have helped with the recovery.

At 10.31pm, bells rang out from the city's Town Hall, St Ann's Church and St Mary's RC Church to mark the moment when the attack took place 12 months ago.
