Families of the deceased staged noisy protests at the Thoothukdi government hospital opposing autopsy of the bodies.

Thousands of protesters participated in the rally calling for the closure of the Sterlite copper plant, which posed health threats besides causing damage to the environment. Protestors set fire a local administrator's office and burned more than 110 vehicles, according to police, who responded with batons and tear gas before firing on the crowd.

Environmental activists and some local politicians want the government to shut the plant permanently.

The plant was shut for more than two months in 2013 by an environmental court after residents complained about emissions.
