Trump walks back Bolton comment on 'Libya model' for denuclearization

South Korea says military drills will go on

Pyongyang on Tuesday threatened to cancel the summit set for June 12 in Singapore, blaming United States demands for "unilateral nuclear abandonment".

At a daily briefing, foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said North Korea and the USA should ensure the summit proceeds as planned and yields "substantial outcomes".

"If the meeting happens, it happens and if it doesn't we go into the next step", Trump said.

Trump then followed up by saying that the so-called Libya model for denuclearization - opposed to strongly by North Korea - would not be applied in the case of the DPRK going in.

North Korean official Ri Son Gwo said talks with South Korea would not continue "unless the serious situation which led to the suspension of the North-South high-level talks is settled".

South Korea said Wednesday's talks between it and the North were to have focused on demilitarization and plans to formally end the Korean War of the early 1950s. -South Korean air force drills with a fleet of bombers, an exercise North Korea called "a provocation". "And it's up to President Trump to make sure that they don't".

National Security Adviser John Bolton drew the ire of the North Korean government for saying that the country's nuclear disarmament should follow the "Libya model" embraced by Moammar Gadhafi, who after giving up his atomic weapons was later overthrown and killed in a US -backed uprising.

Mr Trump said Libya was "a much different model".

The North and South Korean Olympic teams march together in the opening ceremony for the Winter Games.

"I think there was a disappointment after Pompeo's visit", said Hill, referring to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent trip to Pyongyang to prepare for the upcoming summit. That way, if Kim doesn't live up to his side of the bargain, Trump's argument for trying to return to maximum pressure will at least be stronger. "We can't let that happen any more", he said.

Kazianis pointed out that for the North Koreans, "nuclear weapons are all they have that would ever stave off regime change", which is the top fear of the leadership in Pyongyang.

As Mr Bolton looked on, the U.S. president said: "The Libyan model isn't a model that we have at all when we're thinking of North Korea".

"The president's fully prepared and fully ready to carry on in these conversations both leading up to and if the meeting takes place", she said.

Gaddafi was deposed and killed after Libyans joined the 2011 Arab Spring protests, aided by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies who had encouraged him to give up his banned weapons of mass destruction under a 2003 deal.

The drastic change in tone came after months of easing tension and just days after North Korea had announced it would publicly shut its nuclear test site next week and improved the mood for a US summit by releasing the three detained Americans last week.

Mr. Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met on April 27 for a historic summit at Panmunjom and issued a joint declaration calling for improving inter-Korean relations and working for complete denuclearisation of the peninsula.

"We went in there (Libya) to beat him (Gadhafi)".

How does North Korea see it?

The scheduled meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un may not happen after some impolitic comments by John Bolton. "This would be really a South Korean model in terms of their industry, in terms of what they do", he asserted.
