Nikki Haley defends Israel after Gaza violence, walks out of meeting

Smoke rises following an Israeli air strike in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip

On Tuesday, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Israel acted with "restraint" in its response to Palestinian protesters.

Protesters have also hoped to draw attention to a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the economy has collapsed under an Egyptian-Israeli blockade since the Islamist group Hamas took power in 2007.

Putin and Erdogan also discussed the Syrian settlement and Russian-Turkish cooperation in the energy sector. Critics fear that moving the U.S. Embassy is an effective endorsement of Israeli claims that the city will be the "undivided" capital of Israel, despite the fact that 300,000 Palestinians, who are deprived of basic civil and human rights, live in East Jerusalem. Israel considers Jerusalem its undivided capital, but almost all countries have opted to maintain embassies in Tel Aviv because of the holy city's contested status.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have been on the rise since December, when US President Donald Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, triggering furious protests violently suppressed by the IDF.

Israeli troops ended up killing some 60 people and wounding thousands during the protests along the Israel-Gaza border.

Countries have summoned and recalled ambassadors, the United Nations has issued condemnations and some have called for an investigation of Israel's actions.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the embassy's opening on Wednesday in an office complex in west Jerusalem. In a joint statement after the meeting, they said that Hamas needed to avoid "provocations" and violence, but that Israel's military must "exercise maximum restraint" in using lethal force.

But it's convenient for the worldwide community, and in particular the mainstream media, to ignore what's said in Arabic as they pursue an agenda that's grossly biased against Israel.

Israel said many of those killed were members of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terror groups who were using the violent protests as cover to carry out attacks and damage the border fence. "We're at 25 times our capacity and our drug inventory is exhausted", he said.

With 2,400 others injured, that day was the bloodiest day of Israel - Palestine conflict since the 2014 Gaza War.

In response to the uproar over his remarks, Bardawil later said in a statement that Israel was "legitimizing the killing of Palestinians just because they are Palestinians or just because they are Hamas, even if they were unarmed and defending their dignity and rights". Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it in a move not recognized internationally. The eastern half of the city has always been envisioned as the capital of a Palestinian state, if and when a two-state solution is negotiated between the Israelis and the Palestinians. "This march is the embodiment of popular action involving children, women, and involving all the Palestinians that refuse to accept the occupation of our land".
