Two people died and thousands of homes and businesses were without power after strong storms pounded the Northeast on Tuesday.

CT officials said two people in New Fairfield and Danbury were killed Tuesday in separate accidents when trees fell on their trucks, including a woman whose 3-year-old child escaped injury.

The storms downed trees and power lines across the region. Some schools canceled classes or delayed their openings.

Several thousands of customers were left without power on Tuesday as nickel- to golf ball-sized hail and a possible tornado were reported from southern MA through Pennsylvania and into parts of Virginia. Several lightning strikes led to structure fires in New Jersey and MA.
