Lars Von Trier's new serial killer film causes walkout at Cannes

Matt Dillon Is a Full On Psycho in the Trailer for Lars Von Trier's The House That Jack Built

IFC Films on Monday dropped the first trailer for Lars von Trier's The House That Jack Built. This is not surprising considering it's a serial killer movie directed by the guy who gave us Antichrist, which might just be the actual grosses, hardest to watch movie of the 21st century. You can check out a few Twitter reactions below. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night.

The director was banned in the following years after joking about "sympathizing with Hitler" Talking about "The House That Jack Built", Cannes director Thierry Fremaux had earlier said that the film featured "a subject so controversial” that it could only appear in an out-of-competition slot at the festival". There are several graphic scenes of misogynistic torture and mutilation in The House That Jack Built - although I've seen a lot worse in supposedly mainstream USA thrillers - but I suspect that more people will be put off by the lengthy seminars than they will by the sadism and gore. Von Trier knows exactly which buttons to press, and not only does he press them, but absolutely hammers down on them hard, drawing out the torture to make us suffer for longer than needed. the running time playing out at a snail's pace - long it is, and you feel every one of those 155 gut-wrenching minutes.

IFC Films is releasing The House That Jack Built for the US, but no release date has been announced at this time.

In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Von Trier said the film "celebrates the idea that life is evil and soulless".

Nadal, Thiem on Early Collision Course in Rome; ATP Preview
Thiem has split his last eight final appearances overall and is 7-4 in final appearances on clay court. I mentioned yesterday that Zverev's level this week has been stunning, and of a world-class level .

The story follows Jack (Matt Dillion), a serial killer, over the course of 12 years and depicts the murders that truly develop Jack as a serial killer.

Dozens of people walked out in disgust when The House That Jack Built premiered at Cannes, and while I can certainly understand their reasons, I was happy to stay all the way until the jaw-dropping ending.

We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge - a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an nearly childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of, for Jack, risky and hard maneuvers. You may be tempted to walk out of The House That Jack Built before then, but you'll definitely be talking about it afterwards.
