Iran nuclear deal: Envoy starts diplomatic tour after U.S. withdrawal

Обходной маневр России США ждет неприятный сюрприз из-за санкций Ирану

After their meeting, Zarif and Wang hailed the "comprehensive strategic partnership" between their countries, with the Chinese minister saying: "I hope and believe that these visits to multiple countries will. help protect Iran's legitimate national interests and peace and stability in the region".

"China is highly concerned with the direction of the Iranian nuclear issue and is willing to maintain communication with all relevant parties, including Iran", Geng Shuang, spokesman for China's ministry of Foreign Affairs, said ahead of Zarif's arrival.

Zarif arrived in Beijing on Sunday for the first stop of his tour, ahead of visiting Moscow and Brussels in the coming days. "This agreement remains important for our shared security", a joint statement signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced Washington's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal as it, he said, leaves Tehran a possibility to create a nuclear bomb bypassing all the restrictions.

Before leaving, Zarif published a government statement on his Twitter page, slamming the "extremist administration" of President Trump for abandoning "an accord recognized as a victory of diplomacy by the global community".

"We are waiting now for how the decision-makers in the European Union will react".

All foreign businesses operating in Iran will be required to "wind down" activities or "risk severe consequences", the statement added, in effect threatening billions of dollars worth of business deals.

"Israel's claim that it had targeted Iranian assets in Syria has no substance", Syrian Ambassador to China Imad Moustapha said on Friday.

Earlier on Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would remain committed to the deal "if the remaining five countries abide by the agreement".
