Knifeman shot dead after killing one, wounding 4 on streets of Paris

At least one dead in central Paris stabbing

Paris police tweeted that the attack occurred Saturday evening in the 2nd arrondissement or district of the French capital.

Jonathan, a waiter at a local restaurant, told AFP: "I saw him with a knife in his hand".

Molins said the anti-terrorism section of the prosecutor's office was handling the investigation.

The assailant, after attacking bystanders with a knife, rushed at police, shouting "I'll kill you, I'll kill you!" police union consultant Rocco Contento informed Reuters.

France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom", President Emmanuel Macron said shortly after the attack, praising police officers for "neutralizing the terrorist". The campers heard the assailant shouted "Allahu Akbar" when he began to attack passers-by.

Islamic State has claimed the attack.

The brothers behind the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had Chechen links and Turkish authorities said a Chechen jihadist was the suspected organiser of an attack on Istanbul airport in 2016 that killed 45 people.

The man tried to enter several bars and restaurants but was blocked by people inside.

A picture seen by Reuters, which a source said showed the attacker, showed a bare-chested and bearded young man dressed in black pants.

The bloodbath follows a series of ISIS and Al Qaeda attacks in France which has seen nearly 250 killed by terrorists since early 2015.

The person who was fatally stabbed is believed to be a 29-year-old man, while the two seriously injured are said to be a man and a woman. A buddy got here to her help and the attacker left, "hitting on all of the doorways, all of the retailers", the witness informed BFM.

"Then the bartenders told us to come inside very quickly".

France's military has been active in the coalition since 2014, and Islamic State adherents have killed more than 200 people in France in recent years, including the 130 who died in the co-ordinated November 2015 attacks in Paris.

Police said the attacker's motives were still unknown.

"The executor of the stabbing operation in the city of Paris is a soldier of the Islamic State and the operation was carried out in response to the calls to target the coalition states", a "security source" told IS's official Amaq news agency in an Arabic-language report.
