John McCain Opposes Gina Haspel as CIA Chief

CIA Director nominee Gina Haspel waves as she arrives for her meeting

King caucuses with the Democrats.

Haspel has received strong backing from former top intelligence officials, but after the 3 1/2 -hour hearing, two top Democrats on the committee, Sens.

A Republican super PAC bought ads attacking Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, are expected to vote for Haspel. Joe Manchin - may be willing to reach across the aisle for her confirmation.

Vice President Mike Pence, as president of the Senate, can be called on to break a tie vote. Haspel said she wouldn't allow it.

McCain's opposition to Haspel's nomination marked the latest instance in which the Arizona senator broke with Trump.

Haspel, who is now acting Central Intelligence Agency director, was responding to a question about what she would do if Trump ordered her to do something she thought was morally objectionable. No Democrats have announced support for Haspel so far. I've never met the woman, but from what I know about her she is the real deal - a real feminist in the truest definition of the word. Haspel remained stone-faced as police escorted them out of the room.

McCain's office released a statement on Wednesday calling Haspel "a patriot" - but also said that the Senate should vote against her confirmation because of her connection to enhanced interrogation techniques employed in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Collins also brought up the issue of waterboarding when she and King were involved in questioning Haspel during her appearance before the committee Wednesday morning.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME notes that the president as a candidate repeatedly expressed his support for waterboarding.

"I understand that what many people around the country want to know about me are my views on CIA's former detention and interrogation program", Haspel says in the excerpts.

"We have incredible expertise on China at the agency".

Melania Trump to announce formal platform
Joining her for the announcement were children who have written to her and whom she has met during her first year as First Lady. Her choice was ridiculed nearly immediately, given her husband's longtime habit of calling people names on Twitter, but Mrs.

Drawing on her experience as a multilingual secret agent, Haspel said her plans as CIA chief include "putting more intelligence officers in the field overseas and emphasizing "foreign language excellence".

California Senator Kamala Harris did her best future-presidential-candidate impression by pointedly asking whether torture is immoral. Trump supported Haspel, saying that Haspel, a respected nominee, is now being criticized as she was extremely tough on terrorists.

Gina Haspel scares me. Haspel said only that the CIA did "extraordinary work" to prevent another attack on the USA after September 11, using the legal tools the agency was provided.

She says that if she's confirmed, she will follow the clear and legal framework the USA has since imposed that bans any corrosive tactic not spelled out in the Army Field Manual.

She said she wrote the 2005 order to destroy the tapes at the request of her boss, Jose Rodriguez, who was head of the CIA's clandestine service at the time.

"Gina Haspel did a spectacular job today".

Bayh says that for 33 years Haspel has worked to defend America from those who would harm it. "That's the least we should expect from any nominee and certainly the director of the CIA", The committee's vice chairman, Sen.

She will be grilled about details of her time running the covert detention site where terror suspects were brutally interrogated and senators will seek an explanation for why she wanted videos of the sessions destroyed. "Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying", he continued.

The protesters began yelling, "stop the torture, stop the torture" and "don't reward torture".

The 61-year-old intelligence professional, who has served in undercover assignments both domestically and overseas for more than three decades, faces what will likely be a close confirmation vote in the full Senate.
