European Union condemns Russian Federation protest arrests, police brutality

ISIS thugs have called on their supporters to launch attacks at the World Cup in chilling new online propaganda

The Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was released from police custody on Sunday after being detained during nationwide protests in the run-up to Vladimir Putin's inauguration for a fourth presidential term.

Maxim Shevchenko, a member of the Kremlin's human rights council, called for an urgent session of the council to discuss the use of force by Cossacks against protesters in Moscow and other cities.

Riot police beat protesters with truncheons, dragged them along the ground and threw them into police vans in Moscow, in an attempt to disperse a huge crowd that packed Pushkin Square to protest against Putin's swearing-in ceremony for a fourth Kremlin term on Monday.

"They are different people, with different views, but as a whole, they have thoughts and ideas about Russia's future that differ from that of Putin", Navalny said. Pro-Putin supporters also turned up, leading to scuffles between the two groups.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a close Putin ally, has called Navalny a political charlatan.

In the former imperial capital, several thousand people marched along Nevsky Prospect, Saint Petersburg's main thoroughfare, chanting "Putin is a thief" and "Down with the tsar".

The activist was detained at the unauthorized rally in Moscow, police confirmed. Police arrested hundreds, including protest organizer Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who is Putin's most prominent foe.

Videos and photos emerging from Russian Federation show what appear to be large crowds assembled for the protests.

Russians angered by the impending inauguration of Vladimir Putin to a new term as the country's president demonstrated throughout the country on Saturday.

Pro-Putin counterprotestors have also reportedly taken to the streets.

"They're even worse than bandits - the people in power have made this country unfit for living", said Natalia Znaminskaya, 58, editor of a regional journal in the Moscow suburbs.

Ahead of the protests, supporters of Navalny were detained in six Russian cities, being held on charges of violating public assembly laws and resisting arrest.

"I'm not too sure what the protesters want, but, economically, we're fine", said a 37-year-old business analyst who would only give her first name, Olga, who happened upon the Moscow rally on her regular weekend walk.

"Leaders who are secure in their own legitimacy don't arrest their peaceful opponents for protesting", she wrote.

Putin has dismissed Navalny, who was barred from running in the presidential election on what he said was a trumped up pretext, as a troublemaker bent on sowing chaos on behalf of Washington.

The 65-year-old has governed Russian Federation for 18 years, serving six years as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012 and the rest as President.
