UK PM May Replaces Minister As Immigration Scandal Widens

Amber Rudd is thought to have been backing Mrs May ahead of a crunch showdown on the customs union in the Brexit'war Cabinet sub-committee

British Prime Minister Theresa May had earlier appointed Sajid Javid to replace Amber Rudd, who quit the key ministerial post of home secretary late Sunday after misleading lawmakers over deportation targets for illegal immigrants.

The appointment of Sajid Javid as home secretary has triggered a flood of speculation about how the former housing secretary will fare in what is arguably the most hard job in Theresa May's government.

Javid said: "This review will seek to draw out how members of the Windrush generation came to be tangled in measures designed for illegal immigrants, why that was not spotted sooner, and whether the right corrective measures are now in place".

The row has prompted calls for the government to abandon its "hostile environment" policy on illegal immigration, which Ms Rudd and Mrs May continued to defend.

Rudd had been under pressure for weeks after relevations about her department's treatment of the so-called Windrush generation of Caribbean migrants who came to Britain between the mid-1940s and the 1970s as the country rebuilt itself after the second World War.

Downing Street sources said that in preparing for her statement, new information had become available which convinced Rudd she had inadvertently misled parliament and she had therefore phoned May on Sunday to tender her resignation.

He vowed to "do right by the Windrush generation".

Local government and communities minister Javid was the favourite to succeed Ms Rudd at the Home Office.

Challenged on whether she would remove the target, Ms Rudd said: "I have not discussed that with the Prime Minister".

Lei scaled back global operations and instead focused on India , where it's now the top seller alongside Samsung. The Chinese company submitted documents Thursday to list shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Writing in the Telegraph in 2016, Javid said he was a "Eurosceptic and proud of it".

Rudd, who was only appointed to the Home Office in 2016, was seen as a moderate on the European Union and a balancing force in a cabinet containing several heavyweight pro-Brexit figures. It is one of the four great offices of state in British politics along with prime minister, foreign secretary and finance minister, and also one of the toughest.

It came amid the Windrush scandal, in which some migrants who settled in the United Kingdom between the 1940s and 1973 were wrongly being declared illegal immigrants.

But in recent years, successive British governments have sought to appear tough on illegal immigration, and their descendants are now struggling to prove a citizenship status they previously took for granted.

Both he and Mrs Bradley worked with Theresa May while she was Home Secretary.

Labour's Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said: "The change in Home Secretary will mean nothing unless Theresa May's "hostile environment" policy is finally brought to an end". Some Tory MPs urged him not to allow the Government's guard to drop on the issue.

Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas tweeted: "PM loses her human shield and now looks very exposed herself".

There is a residual mystery about the resignation of Amber Rudd as home secretary.

James Brokenshire, the former Northern Ireland secretary who stood down in January due to health reasons to have a tumour removed from his lung, has been moved into Javid's old job as Housing, Communities and Local Government secretary.
