Albemarle County, Charlottesville Students Plan Walk-Out to Protest Gun Violence

The Minnesota State Capitol

The walkout, which was conducted with the school administration's approval, came almost two months to the day that a troubled 19-year-old man armed with an AR-15 rifle opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 people, mostly teenagers, and wounding another 17.

In an event later Friday, students and educators will walk out in a citywide movement against gun violence and demand that political leaders invest in resources for students.

More than 2,300 events are planned for the National School Walkout.

The new wave of activism can be actually a response for the decision to get activity by survivors of the slaughter that is latest, as soon as 17 individuals were killed by a gunman at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

According to the group's website several mid-Michigan schools will take part in Friday's walkout, including schools in St. Johns, Okemos, DeWitt, Howell, and Ionia.

"A student who misses a class without an excuse receives a one-hour detention", Browning said.

Although today's high school students weren't alive when it happened, the more recent mass shooting in Parkland Florida brought the issue to light, spurring student demonstrations on school safety. Feldman, who lives in Tamarac, has experienced the terror of a shooting alert.

Herring didn't intend for the Columbine anniversary to become the focus of a class project, but said students wanted an opportunity to express their feelings about the book.

Berlin Suspect In Attack On Kippah Wearer Turns Himself In
The victim, Adam Armush, was assaulted in a park near his home in the city's upper-class Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood. The RIAS group said Berlin saw 947 anti-Semitic incidents including 18 attacks and 23 threats past year .

Current Columbine students, who weren't born at the time of the massacre, were among those participating in the nationwide walkout on March 14.

"Student responses have ranged from opposing protests to complete support", said Coleman and Adams.

ABC Action News reached out to school districts across the Bay area about the planned events.

"We're not sponsoring it; we're supporting it, and there's a fine line there", Miller said.

Non-white teens express a higher level of concern than their white peers: 64 percent of nonwhite teens, including 73 percent of Hispanics, say they are at least somewhat anxious, compared with 51 percent of white teens. Hogg tweeted Monday that demonstrators should join the Columbine community in acts of community service after the walkout.

The National School Walkout website details the objective and expectations of Friday's event: "We are walking out for those who lost their lives to gun violence, to talk about the real problems our country is facing and to find solutions (to) the problems that our leaders have failed to address".

"We will have police officers blocking streets and protecting us", they said. They appear to have taken a stricter position ahead of Friday's event. We encourage students to attend class and be present for instruction. "My understanding is that Columbine was conflicted themselves as to what direction they wanted to go with it and as a result their message initially came out as seemingly a bit confused".
