Armenia opposition chief urges new protests, strike

Opposition-led protesters break into building of Armenian public radio

The main organizer of the protests, Civil Contract party leader Nikol Pashinian, said he will block more streets in the coming days in a bid to prevent Sarkisian from becoming prime minister. Yet the country's inherently volatile politics and strategic position make any reprieve fragile at best, as evidenced by the growing protests against Sargsyan's nomination as prime minister in the capital, Yerevan.*.

Those detained are being kept at various police stations in Yerevan.

According to the hospital administration, three police officers were also hospitalized.

An RFE/RL correspondent saw two protesters injured as a result.

Police fired stun grenades and used barbed wires to stop the protestors, leaving several people wounded, after thousands of opposition supporters began to march toward parliament in Yerevan.

Thousands of Armenian protesters clashed with riot police in the capital city Yerevan on April 16.

However, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia has nominated Sargsyan for the PM, with the opposition saying the former president has broken his vow in order to secure his grip on power. The demonstrators carried Armenian national flags, burnt flares and chanted anti-government slogans.

Pashinian specifically called for a "blockade" of the parliament building. "Through civil disobedience he has shown that Armenian citizens aren't indifferent to their state, aren't indifferent to the fact that Serzh Sarkisian is getting ready to occupy the post of prime minister, which will consolidate the culture of authoritarian government".

"We have to close those streets with anything we can get hold of", he told the supporters that again gathered in France Square.

"We can not let this happen". After Khachatur Abovyan, which is located in the city center. Armenia's HHK-controlled parliament is due to vote for the next premier on Monday.

Pashinian said the closure of the streets leading to the parliament should start already before midnight.
