Cynthia Nixon Wins Major Progressive Endorsement For New York Primary

Cynthia Nixon: Marijuana is “Effectively Legal” For White People

Saying New Yorkers need a governor "who will stand with the people", Cynthia Nixon won the support of the Working Families Party on Saturday, giving her campaign a boost in its bid to beat incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

When the nod becomes official at the party's nominating convention next month, it would give Nixon a critical line on the November ballot if she loses the Democratic primary in September. Executive director, Bill Lipton, says many in the party blame Cuomo for the continued control of the State Senate by Republicans, saying Cuomo didn't do enough to help Democrats win seats and mend differences.

The small but influential Working Families Party endorsed Cuomo in 2010 and 2014.

Nixon is mounting a progressive challenge against Cuomo.

The mother of the child was Katie Pladl, 20, who was Steven Pladl's biological daughter and his wife. Former wife Alyssa was 17 and Steven was 22 when they had Katie and opted to put her up for adoption.

As governor, Cynthia would fight for a progressive agenda in NY by supporting policies to provide health care for all, legalize marijuana, and take corporate money out of politics.

Part of Nixon's strategy to upset Cuomo in the gubernatorial race is tapping into the Black and Latino voter base, which Cuomo has historically received strong support from. NYPAN, the main New York State affiliate of Our Revolution, came out of Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and has grown to 30 chapters and 8 affiliates throughout the state with thousands of grassroots members.

Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Abbey Fashouer says the governor's "record of progressive accomplishment is unmatched". There were also published reports that said the governor urged the unions to withdraw funding from community groups within the Working Families Party.
