France says 'large part' of Syria chemical arsenal destroyed
These strikes are a retaliation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's poison gas attack that killed around 60 people last week in Syria.
The bombing represents a major escalation in the West's confrontation with Assad's superpower ally Russian Federation, but is unlikely to alter the course of a multi-sided war which has killed at least half a million people in the past seven years.
British Prime Minister Theresa May won backing from her senior ministers on Thursday to take unspecified action with the United States and France to deter further use of chemical weapons by Syria. These are not the actions of a man. As he spoke, explosions rocked Damascus.
Government commentators claimed the series of missile strikes had caused "minimal damage", and that "many had missed their targets".
Obama gave a speech saying the United States should act against Syria but said congress should authorize any military action - congress didn't act.
Trump said that the "massacre" last weekend in Syria "was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very awful regime".
He said that the Syrian leader had launched a "savage" chemical weapons attack previously and again recently.
Russian Federation said it was being "threatened" and said the air strikes "will not be left without consequences" in a statement from its ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, posted on Twitter. They say this is evidence that the victims were exposed to a nerve agent.
When asked whether the UK had communicated with Russian Federation ahead of the strikes, May said: "This is not something that the United Kingdom has been involved in".
"I have done so because I judge this action to be in Britain's national interest". We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in our world.
Holocaust Memorial Day celebrated locally
Organizers say the lecture series was started more than 50 years ago by local Holocaust survivor, Helen Sperling. The study included 1,350 interviews with Americans aged 18 and over.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the response was "limited to the Syrian regime's capabilities to produce and use chemical weapons".
May added: "The Syrian Regime has a history of using chemical weapons against its own people in the most cruel and abhorrent way".
"The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed", he said.
McKenzie said that none "of our aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses".
"We pray that God will bring comfort to those suffering in Syria".
"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", he told reporters.
One week after a suspected chemical attack on civilians the United States blamed on the Syrian government, President Donald Trump on Friday ordered strikes on Syrian targets.
"Insulting the president of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible", Antonov added.
"Russia severely condemns the attack on Syria where Russian military are helping the lawful government in the fight with terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement, its first reaction to the strikes.
