Oscar-winning director Milos Forman dies aged 86 after short illness

Miloš Forman, the Czech American filmmaker who may have been best-known for his Oscar-winning work on Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, is dead at 86.

The two-time Oscar victor passed away following a short illness, his third wife Martina confirmed to Czech news agency CTK. Forman's manager Dennis Aspland also confirmed the same.

He received his last best director Oscar nod for the 1996 film The People Vs Larry Flynt.

Considered one of the pioneers of the Czechoslovak New Wave, Forman left his home country in 1968 after his films, particularly The Fireman's Ball, got in trouble with the administration.

As a director, Forman brought out terrific performances from several of the greatest actors like Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and F. Murray Abraham, all who landed an Academy Award win for Best Acting.

"Amadeus" won eight Academy Awards, including for best picture and for Forman as best director.

"That is the only way to open the film to a certain kind of lightness", he said.

Forman, by then an American citizen, returned to film the drama nearly entirely in Czechoslovakia.

Protests, 'cleaning' and tributes mark Ambedkar's birth anniversary this year
Meanwhile, another statue of BR Ambedkar was today found vandalised in the state's Jaunpur district, reported news agency IANS. The situation was said to be under control as authorities imposed prohibitory conditions and deployed additional police force.

Forman said the film's central issues of censorship and free expression were influenced by his youth in Eastern Europe, when filmmakers and other artists were limited in what they could say by the communist regime.

He was raised an orphan after both his parents died in concentration camps during World War Two.

His satire "The Fireman's Ball" was banned in Czechoslovakia in 1968 after the Soviets invaded and crushed any liberal strides the country had made.

Milos Forman poses after being presented with the "Giraldillo" award for his life-long career achievements at Sevilla Festival Film Spain.in 2004.

He followed up his success in 1979 with a film adaptation of the hit musical "Hair", and then in 1981 with an adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's novel "Ragtime".

Forman directed almost two dozen films in his career, but he enjoyed his greatest critical and commercial success during the '70s and '80s.

Forman's first USA film "Taking Off" (1971) was also filmed with non-actors but failed to impress a non-European audience.

Forman is survived by his wife, Martina Zborilova-Forman, and four children. They were named after comedian Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey, who played the part of Kaufman in "Man on the Moon".
