Zuckerberg on sharing his personal info: 'Um, uh, no'
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg emerged largely unscathed Wednesday (April 11) from two days of high-stakes hearings that saw USA lawmakers grill the billionaire over how the online giant feeds users' data to advertisers and chide him over privacy rights.
It was not until I checked it out here that I discovered one of my friends installed the personality quiz app "This Is Your Digital Life" before 2014, and some of my data would have made it to the servers of Cambridge Analytica.
Wednesday's hearing generally relied less on scolding Zuckerberg for Facebook's privacy violations - as he saw in Tuesday's Senate hearings - and mostly addressed promises to fix the problems.
Throughout the past two days, Zuckerberg repeatedly stated that he was not against regulation, but that it was important to determine what type of regulation would be the most beneficial for the technology sector.
Colorado Democrat Diana DeGette made the point that Facebook hasn't suffered financially for multiple scandals over the privacy of users' data, meaning there is no financial incentive for it to change its behaviour.
One of Facebook's little-known, highly controversial practices is in the spotlight: The fact that it collects data on people who have never signed up for the social network.
Zuckerberg has taken questions on a range of issues, from fake news and terrorist content to Russian propaganda and data privacy, as USA lawmakers consider possible regulatory remedies. At the close of Wednesday's hearing, Zuckerberg had spent roughly 10 out of the previous 24 hours testifying before Congress.
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe that with this case, if Facebook was resisting the USA government about sharing the data of its users, it will not be resisting anymore. He answered yes when Eshoo asked if his information had been sold to "malicious third parties".
I think it's pretty clear that Facebook has completely changed the way the media industry works.
Teachers call for fairer school funding
The district, which serves more than 7,000 students, gave out bats to teachers following a day of school shooting response training.
Mike Doyle, a Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania, accused Facebook of "turning a blind eye" to developers' abuses because it was more concerned with attracting apps to its platform than protecting users.
Zuckerberg is facing a grilling before lawmakers on matters related to Cambridge Analytica's allegedly improper acquisition of Facebook data for use in the 2016 United States presidential campaign, along with Russia's alleged use of the platform to spread misinformation.
For Zuckerberg, the hearing seemed like a drill. One is security - if Facebook didn't track people, he said, the platform couldn't prevent someone from downloading every public Facebook page.
"I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here".
"My position is not that there should be no regulation, but I also think you have to be careful about what regulation you put in place", he said. Facebook shares closed up 0.78 percent on Wednesday after rising 4.5 percent Tuesday.
The poll's findings come as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before Capitol Hill lawmakers this week, first appearing at a five-hour hearing before a joint session of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees. Earlier this year, special counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 Russian individuals and three Russian companies in a plot to interfere in the 2016 presidential election through a social media propaganda effort that included online ad purchases using US aliases and politicking on USA soil. "They're going to keep getting better and we need to invest in getting better at this too".
Though he didn't mention it in front of Congress, Facebook also targets people with ads on other websites even if they don't have an account.
"This is a complex issue", Mr Zuckerberg said.
That disclosure pitched Facebook into a crisis of confidence among users, advertisers, employees and investors who were already struggling with Facebook's reaction to fake news and its role in the 2016 election.
