UN Chief Urges Member States to Avoid Escalation of Situation in Syria

“The Cold War is back” : UN's Secretary General, Antonio Guterres

Britain will take action to "alleviate humanitarian distress and deter the future use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", the British Ambassador to the United Nations, Karen Pierce, said here Friday.

She acknowledged that some commentators have asked why the United States has not made its "intelligence information" public if it has any, but said "a lot of this stuff is classified right now".

Nebenzia said the United States' "consumeristic" approach to the UNSC and repeated "reckless conduct in encroachment of sovereign states and worldwide law" was "unworthy" of its membership to the global organisation. "Is the latest wave of chaos being unleashed only for the sake of that?"

A competing draft penned by Russian Federation, which would have established the mechanism for one year as well but would have given the Security Council the responsibility to assign accountability for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, was also not adopted.

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Washington's decision to put forward its resolution could be a prelude to a Western strike on Syria. Both Russia and Syria have denied it.

Last month Britain blamed Russian Federation for a nerve agent attack on an ex-spy and his daughter, accusations Russian Federation has vehemently denied.

But Guterres said Syria today is the most serious, and "there is no military solution to the conflict".

Sens. Pat Roberts, Ben Sasse say Trump looking to re-enter TPP
The EPA now bans the 15-percent blend, called E15, during the summer because of concerns that it contributes to smog on hot days. In January, he said he would be open to reconsidering the deal if the USA could strike a " substantially better " agreement.

"Increasing tensions and the inability to reach a compromise in the establishment of an accountability mechanism threaten to lead to a full-blown military escalation". "The attack took place on Saturday, we know for a fact that it was a chemical weapon", spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

After warning in a belligerent tweet earlier this week that "missiles are coming", Trump has backed off from talk of imminent action and is meeting with military commanders to look at options.

"Perpetrators of such attacks must be identified and held accountable", the UN's International Commission of Inquiry on Syria said in a statement, noting that the use of such weapons is strictly banned under a global treaty ratified by Syria.

It is incumbent on the UN Security Council to hold perpetrators of these crimes to account and make clear to the world that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

He "regretted" the Russian veto at the U.N. Security Council which prevented a "united and firm response" after a suspected gas attack last week in Douma, Syria.

Britain's United Nations ambassador, Karen Pierce, noted that Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet "has agreed on the need to take action to alleviate humanitarian distress and to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime".

On Thursday, Russia's military said Douma has been brought under full control of the Syrian government under a Russia-mediated deal that secured the evacuation of the rebels and thousands of civilians after it was recaptured by Syrian forces.
