Pakistani Ex-Prime Minister Sharif Gets Lifetime Politics Ban

NAB alleges the road was constructed in connivance with Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif for his personal benefit in 1998

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, who was heading the bench, observed before the verdict that the public deserved leaders of good character.

The verdict stated, "the absence of a time limit for the ineligibility of a candidate for election in Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution is the basis for holding his incapacity to be incurable by efflux of time, the reasons recorded in our judgment reinforce that conclusion".

The court ruling comes months ahead of expected general elections, pitting the PML-N against its main rival, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party led by former cricket star Imran Khan.

Sharif, 68, a three-time former prime minister, was disqualified and removed from office a year ago on corruption allegations against his family. Supreme Court Justice Umar Ata Bandial has described the decision of the jury against Nawaz's disqualification as being permanent, so he can't challenge it in anyway, and will just have to accept it.

On July 28, 2017, Pakistan Supreme Court had disqualified Nawaz Sharif after he was found guilty in the Panama Papers case. In 2009 and 2010, when the then ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) proposed removal of Article 62, Nawaz Sharif had opposed it, believing the move would upset the powerful military establishment.

"Now today they disqualified (Sharif) for life".

Pope apologizes for 'serious mistakes' in judging Chilean abuse cases
On the plane returning from Chile, Francis told reporters he believed the bishop was innocent. "Is that clear?" the pope replied. Still, they said specific measures, including the resignation of Barros, were needed to restore confidence in the Church.

PaK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan has made a decision to induct eight more ministers in the cabinet, taking the total strength of the members of his council of ministers to 20, said sources.

PPP leader Khursheed Shah said his party had repeatedly told Sharif to let Parliament decide the fate of politicians, "but he did not listen and went to the Supreme Court".

"The lifetime disqualification will damage the party in elections besides putting deeper cracks into the party ranks", said Mazhar Abbas, a Karachi-based political analyst.

Reacting to the apex court's ruling, he said that the top court's larger bench has jointly explained the constitution's important article.

Nawaz asked party members to observe patience and wait for the party's call as such decisions can not waiver PML-N's mission of serving the people.
