Tabloid paid out $30K to spike story alleging Trump love child

A Former Trump Tower Doorman Was Allegedly Paid $30000 To Keep Quiet About Trump's Sex Life

During the 2016 presidential campaign, the Enquirer published a string of allegations against Trump's rivals, such as stories claiming Democratic rival Hillary Clinton was a bisexual "secret sex freak" and was kept alive only by a "narcotics cocktail".

The Associated Press confirmed the details of the Enquirer's payment through a review of a confidential contract and interviews with dozens of current and former employees of the Enquirer and its parent company, American Media Inc.

In a report published Thursday, The New Yorker detailed a $30,000 payment made by the company in 2015 to a former Trump Tower doorman pushing unconfirmed but salacious rumors about Trump, raising additional questions about Cohen's involvement with AMI and other media organizations.

The Associated Press wrote that its reporters could not confirm that the rumor of the child was true - but more importantly, the AP was able to confirm that the doorman who then worked in Trump World Tower, Dino Sajudin, received the $30,000 payment from the tabloid in exchange for signing an agreement that he would never discuss the rumor.

But four longtime workers at the publication claim they were ordered to back-off the story before following-up potentially promising leads.

The magazine's publisher, whose chief executive David Pecker is a friend of Mr Trump, has repeatedly been accused of buying rights to unfavourable stories about the United States president in order to bury them.

They were said to have downed tools shortly after Sajudin passed a lie-detector test to establish how he heard the rumor.

Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, told the news service he had spoken about the rumor with the magazine when it was reportedly working on it. The Enquirer never ran that story - a move known as "catch and kill" in the media industry. While he frequently calls reports from mainstream companies "fake news", Trump has had a relatively positive relationship with AMI, which has generally published articles to his liking.

Six former A.M.I. employees told me that [AMI Publisher and Trump friend David] Pecker routinely makes catch-and-kill arrangements like the one reached with McDougal.

"He's infamous for making up stories", Nikki Benfatto said of Mr. Sajudin. Ultimately, he said the information "lacked any credibility", so he spiked the story on those merits.

We'll spare you the rest of the details, but Sajudin is suing the company for discrimination and is seeking unspecified damages.

"Paying for information has always been a practice of The National Enquirer and to suggest that it has only paid for, and not run, stories about any particular person is absurd".

Its editor Dylan Howard said: 'Unfortunately...

"They went to such extraordinary lengths to bury a story that seemed - in the view of a lot of people involved in this investigation - baseless", Ronan Farrow, who authored the New Yorker report, told George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America on Thursday.

The "father of the family" told The New Yorker that Sajudin's claims were "completely false and ridiculous".

"This is all fake", she said a year ago. Federal authorities are apparently investigating that payment, having executed search warrants this week for evidence about that payment.

Trump has denied knowing about the Daniels' payment. Her mother did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
