Sens. Pat Roberts, Ben Sasse say Trump looking to re-enter TPP

Japan minister: Good to have US back in TPP but path of return tough (VIDEO)

Trump signed an executive order scrapping the deal days after his inauguration in 2017, hailing the decision as a "great thing for the American worker". In January, he said he would be open to reconsidering the deal if the USA could strike a "substantially better" agreement. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and some members of the administration appeared surprised by the news.

Roberts said Kudlow and Lighthizer would be working with the Agriculture Committee, calling the move "certainly good news". Senator Ben Sasse told reporters of Trump's commitment on TPP, and two White House officials who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the statement.

Trump is seeking to reassure the lawmakers on proposed China tariffs.

Trump railed against the original TPP and other multilateral trade deals throughout the 2016 campaign, arguing that poorly negotiated trade agreements destroyed U.S. jobs.

During a February news conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Trump raised the possibility of rejoining TPP if the negotiators offered more favourable terms.

The president says China has consistently treated USA agriculture unfairly and his administration is "changing things with respect to trade".

He criticized the idea of using government welfare payments to farmers to help them survive threatening tariffs from China. We do not want another subsidy program. "The president has consistently said he would be open to a substantially better deal, including in his speech in Davos earlier this year".

But in recent months - even as he has erected tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and against China - the President has also begun to signal a willingness to reassess his stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He said that's shifting work to competitors outside the US, including in Canada and Mexico because they now enjoy a big edge on material costs.

The U.S. hasn't announced a date it intends to impose tariffs on an initial list of $50 billion in Chinese goods. Some signatories, however, agreed to rework it without the U.S. and it re-emerged this January under the name, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, urged lawmakers and the administration to stay the course in getting tough on China.
