Malcolm Turnbull faces leadership pressure ahead of polls

Tony Abbott and a group of lycra-clad politicians will take part in Melbourne's Pollie Pedal ride

They say there is still hope for the Prime Minister to turn polling around, with Bill Shorten potentially facing some hard by-elections if more MPs are referred to the High Court over their citizenship.

Turnbull attempted to brush off Monday's result, which has Labor leading the government 52 to 48 on the two-party preferred measure, as not being important to Australians.

Mr Abbott yesterday made no attempt to hide his continued anger at his ousting or his dim view of Mr Turnbull's leadership.

Mr Turnbull, who noted the Abbott government had lost 30 Newspolls when he took the leadership in 2015, will be in Sydney on Monday to face inevitable questions about his leadership.

Nor did he say if he'd forgiven Mr Turnbull for replacing him in his first term as prime minister. "I think the other 148, if they were being honest, would tell you that if the opportunity came their way they'd be interested as well".

According to Newspoll, he stands one point ahead of Julie Bishop as preferred Liberal leader on 28 per cent, while Mr Abbott (13 per cent) and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton (9 per cent) find themselves well behind their moderate counterparts.

The Turnbull government has been plagued with a series of bad news stories at the hands of its senior players, all of which have likely contributed to the consistently poor Newspoll results.

Asked if he would call a leadership vote if he recorded a 30th Newspoll loss, he said: "No".

And then they had to show a judge that evidence of that crime was that Michael Cohen's office. McDougal has said she carried on an affair with Trump in 2006 after the birth of his son.

Its energy and climate change policy is a "disaster", she added, and there has been a "big fail" on NBN.

Mr Abbott is a member of the so-called Monash Group, a newly formed gathering of conservative backbenchers, calling for taxpayers' money to be invested in a new coal power station.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said it is possible to turn the polls around, citing the recent South Australian election.

"None of us should live in the past or dwell on things", Mr Abbott told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday before pushing off on the annual Pollie Pedal charity bike ride.

The impact of the poll was to have been within the Liberal Party.

While most politicians on both sides of the political spectrum tried to dismiss the importance of polls, former prime minister Kevin Rudd went in the opposite direction, referring to his own ousting in 2010 in a tweet.

"I regret making those remarks at the time, making remarks about 30 Newspolls at the time", he said today.

"It's not unusual for incumbent governments in between elections being behind in the polls, I mean we're not actually that far behind, truth be told", he told ABC radio. Based on that, coup leaders acted, saying we'd lose election. "Both MT&BS wld be long gone if we applied that standard now", he said.
