A Traumatic brain injury increases risk of dementia by 24 percent
The research encompassed a large study population, 36 years of follow-up, and access to a uniform healthcare system that tracks the number and severity of TBIs.
But the team said the absolute risk to an individual remained low.
"Severe TBI is particularly frequent in young people, and it is concerning that the risk of dementia is particular high in relatively young persons who suffer TBI", co-author Jakob Christensen, an associate professor of neurology at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, said in a statement. It does confirm earlier reports that people who have had brain injuries are at a slightly increased risk of developing the condition, but head injury is still a much smaller contributory factor for developing dementia than smoking, or a sedentary lifestyle - risk factors that are much easier for all of us to do something about.
Researchers obtained their TBI data from the Danish National Patient Register, while information on dementia involved a combination of data from the National Patient Register, the Danish Psychiatric Central Register and the Danish National Prescription Registry. The researchers found that the risk of dementia increased by 33 percent for two or three TBIs, 61 percent for four injuries and 183 percent for five or more injuries.
According to United Nations data, around 50 million people around the world suffer from dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease.
Dr Carol Routledge, director of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "This well-conducted study adds significant weight to previous evidence of a link between head injury and an increased risk of dementia".
Those who sustained a TBI in their 30s were 37% more likely to develop dementia 30 years later compared to those who did not.
Iran's rial at all-time low against the dollar
The 20 percent figure is significant, because it is more than enough to quickly reach the threshold for a nuclear weapon. In January, Trump announced he is waiving the USA sanctions against Iran for the "last time".
According to the study authors, more than 50 million people every year experience a traumatic brain injury.
In the first TBI diagnoses, 85 per cent had been characterised as mild and 15 per cent had been characterised as severe or skull fracture. Between 1999 and 2013, 126,734 people (4.5%) aged 50 or older were diagnosed with dementia.
Importantly, the younger the individual sustaining a TBI the higher the risk of subsequent dementia, when taking time since TBI into account.
Fann said future research trying to narrow down why some people with brain injuries get dementia while other don't is important.
However, the study results could lead people with TBI histories to change certain behaviors like alcohol and tobacco use, regular exercise and treating hypertension, diabetes and depression to limit other potential risk factors for dementia.
There are nearly 350,000 hospital admissions due to brain damage in the United Kingdom per year, which comes to an average of one injury every 90 seconds.
