Israel Blamed For Missile Strike On Syrian Airbase; 14 Reported Killed

Smoke rises from one of the buildings in the city of Homs Syria

The Syrian state news agency SANA reported a missile attack on the country on Monday morning, while USA officials are saying the military has not launched any strikes.

Interfax cited the Russian Defence Ministry as saying the Israeli war planes had carried out the strikes from Lebanese air space, and that Syrian air defence systems had shot down five of eight missiles fired.

"It is necessary to warn once again that military intervention under far-fetched and fabricated pretexts in Syria, where Russian servicemen are located at the request of the legitimate government, is absolutely unacceptable and can lead to the most serious consequences", the foreign ministry in Moscow said in a statement.

The attack took place hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of a "big price to pay" following the reports of a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma which killed dozens of people, including children.

According to the reports, the chemical attack on Saturday killed at least 49 people and injured 500 others, Thomas Markram, the deputy to the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, told the Council.

The US and France threatened to respond to the alleged chemical attack, but deny striking the base, according to a BBC News report.

The United States plans to call for a U.N. Security Council vote on Tuesday on a proposal for a new inquiry into responsibility for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, diplomats said.

The AP and other global news organizations reported SANA said the country's air defenses had shot down eight missiles.

Syrian state TV SANA reported that there had been casualties at the base, but Russia said no Russian military advisers were hurt in the attack.

The Zelaya siblings, from El Salvador, huddle together, part of a caravan of Central American migrants traveling in Mexico. Organizer Irineo Mujica said, "We will try to find a better way of doing our caravans" in coming years.

Israel, which has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of its neighbour's seven-year-old civil war, has not confirmed nor denied mounting the raid.

Syrian government forces were on high alert and taking precautionary measures Tuesday at military positions across the country amid fears of a US strike in the aftermath of the attack near Damascus.

Russian Federation and Syria have invited a probe into the alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma after US President Donald Trump threatened that there would be a "big price to pay".

However, both countries denied any involvement in the airstrikes early on Monday.

The Sound and Picture Organization, an activist collective in eastern Syria, said that Iranian fighters and members of Lebanon's Hezbollah group have evacuated their positions in the Boukamal area, near the Iraqi border, which was recently retaken from the Islamic State group.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the strike on the T-4 base was a risky development. "President Obama said in 2012 that he would establish a "red line" against the use of chemical weapons and then did nothing".

Trump has declared his intent to withdraw US troops from Syria in the coming months, despite resistance from many of his advisers.

The base, which was used as a launching pad for attacks against Islamic State militants who were at one point stationed nearby, is near the Shayrat air base, which was targeted by US missiles past year in response to a chemical weapons attack.
