Trump Boycotts Annual White House Correspondents Dinner Again

Trump had said in an interview aired on Friday on NY radio station 77 WABC that he probably would not attend the dinner, which normally features big names from the worlds of politics and entertainment as guests of media organisations.

The president added that he wants to get things "straightened out with the press", whom he accused of using made up sources, before he decides to end his boycott of the fundraiser. "So it's probably unlikely I'll do it".

In 2017, Trump turned down an invitation to the dinner and hosted a political rally in Pennsylvania instead.

"The April 28 dinner celebrates award-winning reporting, scholarship winners and the vital role of the First Amendment and the free press in American democracy", Talev said.

The decision is no surprise given Trump's relationship with the media.

While other members of his administration are expected to attend the dinner in Washington on April 28, Trump himself will skip the event - in which the president is traditionally subjected to mockery by guests, and makes a satirical speech of his own. Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter both skipped multiple correspondents' dinners, but after Reagan's assassination attempt, United States presidents attended every dinner for 36 consecutive years.

The event typically features a comedian who roasts the president and his team and then the top executive returns it to the press.

He rented Capitol Hill accommodation from the wife of an energy lobbyist previous year at the below-market rate of US$50 per day and used taxpayer funds for first-class travel.

Mr. Trump's nine-minute appearance on WABC was not exactly an outlier when it comes to high-ranking administration officials making time for local NY programming.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, plans to appear in Mr. Trump's stead. According to the WHCA, the president will also "actively encourage" administration officials to attend.
