Prince Charles wants Australia to become a republic: Paul Keating

Monarchist Tony Abbot has accused Paul Keating of fabricating Prince Charles's beliefs after he insisted the future king wants Australia to be a republic

Senator James McGrath and Minister Cameron Dick welcomed the royals off the plane, before they were whisked into a waiting auto and off to Old Government House in Brisbane.

It is believed in December, the Australian Republic Movement wrote a letter to the Duke of Cornwall and invited the Prince of Wales to give a speech about the future of the monarchy in the country.

The royals will head straight to Old Government House, before visiting Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, where they will meet with families and children.

Former Australian Prime Minster Paul Keating has claimed the next-in-line to the throne wants Australia to be independent of the British Monarchy.

The royal couple could be seen greeting senators and ministers on the tarmac at the airport. "I'm shaking. The Prince's were chunky".

Fellow Brisbane local Lorraine shook Charles' hand, but confessed later she had no idea what he said to her. "She's so lovely and I told her so".

The second day of the royal visit will involve a tour of the Athletes' Village followed by the swimming finals at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre where Prince Charles will present the medals.

Arsène Wenger rates Arsenal's chances against CSKA Moscow as 50/50
When I heard I could swap Manchester United for Arsenal , I said, "Yes, I want to do that", I didn't think twice. Wenger confirmed he has everyone available for selection for the crucial match including Alexandre Lacazette .

More to come as the tour progresses.

Bundaberg is the first regional stop for Prince Charles as part of his official duties for the Commonwealth Games.

The tour is the 16th trip to Australia and the seventh to Queensland for Charles, while it is Camilla's third visit.

The couple's visit comes during a time when republican sentiment is gaining attention in Australia.

"It is very disrespectful to Prince Charles himself, and as a nation, to say we were happy with your mother reigning over us for 80 years but we don't want you at all".

"The prince and I, and Lucy (Turnbull) share a lot of common interests, particularly in terms of urbanism, architecture, planning, environment and ecology".
