Trump sticks by EPA chief as lawmakers call for resignation

Scott Pruitt attends a meeting at the White House on Feb. 12 2018

Pruitt interjected: "I did not".

Embattled Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday that reports on his excessive spending and scrutiny over his housing are just fueled by critics trying to derail President Trump's agenda. "But again, we take this seriously and we are looking into it", Sanders said when asked if Trump had faith in Pruitt. That message was reinforced by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly in a telephone call to Pruitt on Tuesday morning.

Pruitt is facing criticism and controversy over reports that he rented a room in Washington, DC, from the family of an energy lobbyist.

Almost a dozen USA states and Washington, D.C., on Tuesday promised to defend federal automobile efficiency standards against a rollback proposed this week by Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt claims he was in the dark about the pay requests. LeBel said he thinks the EPA may target those next.

"Entering into this arrangement causes a reasonable person to question the integrity of the EPA decision", Don Fox, who served as general counsel of the Office of Government Ethics during the Obama and George W. Bush administrations, told the Times. "It's time for him to resign or for @POTUS to dismiss him", Curbelo, a moderate Republican, said on Twitter. Pruitt is now under investigation by the EPA's inspector general and the House Oversight Committee.

Pruitt is also facing unflattering headlines about his use of private jets and his living arrangements.

Separately, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, pressed the inspector general to probe the condo rental, including any concessions given to Pruitt, whether security officials stayed on site and whether there was any internal EPA vetting of the deal.

The Atlantic reported on Monday that Pruitt used an obscure legal provision to bypass the White House and give raises to two top staffers.

"The signoff by the EPA came even though the agency, at the end of the Obama administration, had moved to fine Enbridge $61 million in connection with a 2010 pipeline episode that sent hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River in MI and other waterways", the Times reported.

The EPA chief has defended his leadership.
