UK Manufacturing Activity Maintains Steady Growth In March

European Open Preview: Equities soften as China retaliates; US ISM manufacturing PMI pending

Russian manufacturing activity rose slightly in March, but remained below its long-term average, as growth in new orders and production slowed down.

Our manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), the first in Nigeria, rose strongly in March from 54.7 to 59.4.

March data pointed to sustained pressure on operating capacity across the manufacturing sector, as highlighted by another solid rise in backlogs of work.

While there is an increase in new export orders during the said month, Dodhia said, "On a negative note, further advances in trade disputes could potentially weigh on sales to worldwide clients".

But the performance completes a relatively weak quarter for the industry after a mini-boom at the end of past year. The overall rising manufacturing activity meant that manufacturing companies hired more staff-members. A number of respondents mentioned that efforts to lower costs had been behind the latest drop in employment. Panellists widely associated falls in output with lower order book volumes.

Earlier sister surveys showed although growth slowed in the currency union's four biggest economies it still stayed strong.

"Taken together, the data suggest a moderation from the rates of growth that we saw in much of 2017". Nonetheless, the rise was sufficient to l ead to a further increase in stocks of inputs, albeit one that was marginal.

The Netherlands posted the strongest performance in the eurozone, recording a PMI of 61.5, however, this was also a five-month low.

The Commerce Department reported in its third estimate that the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.9% in the last three months of 2017.

Euro zone economic growth has already peaked, another Reuters poll found last month, but the European Central Bank will probably decide this summer to slash its bond purchases if things develop as expected, policymaker Ewald Nowotny said last week.

Production and total new orders both expanded at their weakest rates in four months, while the increase in export sales was the slowest since May, according to the survey, which is sponsored by Caixin and compiled by worldwide information and data analytics provider IHS Markit Ltd.

Indian goods manufacturers raised their output for the eighth successive month during March.

"With cost inflationary pressures also moderating to provide some respite for margins, the sector looks set to make further slow and steady progress as we head through the spring", Dobson said.
