Crowdfunding campaign to save Toys "R" Us doesn't include Canadian stores

Petition seeks $1B to save Toys R Us

Toys R Us announced it would be closing or selling all of its stores in the United States.

While the closing of Toys R Us is a bittersweet prospect for kids of the '80s and '90s in particular (like myself), there is a big question about whether it's the sort of "cause" that needs to be fought.

Toys R Us has not confirmed whether all 735 of its stores are beginning sales.

"There have been many sad moments for Toys "R" Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today's news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus, after a period of declining health", the company said in a statement.

Toy company executive Isaac Larian says he and other investors have pledged a total of $200 million in financing and hope to raise four times that amount in crowdfunding in order to bid for up to 400 of the Toys R Us stores being liquidated in bankruptcy.

"You're going to see some of the same toys at Toys R' Us, but we offer specialty toys you've probably never seen", says Stone.

So far, almost $4,000 has been donated by Toys R Us fans.

"The toy business will suffer" without Toys R Us, Larian said in a telephone interview. Donors were being enticed with promises of #SaveToysRUs bumper stickers, special edition toys, invites to a reopening block party and opportunities to tour the oldest toy factory now operating in the US depending on the amount they give.

China firmly opposes United States tariffs on Chinese imports
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are backing President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on China as Beijing threatens to retaliate. Trump's technology order is in response to "unfair and harmful acquisition of U.S. technology", said a statement by the U.S.

Luke Roberts said he's been shopping at Toys "R" Us for the past 16 years. The popular toy chain filed for liquidation late last week, triggering the likely closure or sale of all their USA stores.

The industry has also lost millions to Toys "R" Us, including Larian's Van Nuys, Calif. -based MGA, which is owed about $12 million, according to court filings.

But for decades, it was Toys R Us that drove trends in child's play, becoming a launchpad for what became some of the industry's hottest toys.

Rosenberg said Lazarus understood that the success of Toy R Us stemmed from creating a "circus-like atmosphere to keep kids wanting to come back every week".

"We live in a digital online world at this point and online shopping has significantly taken over in comparison to the in stores", Roberts said.

Larian and his brother eventually started an import business that later became MGA, which blossomed in 2001 with the debut of Bratz, a line of sassy dolls with eye shadow and glossy lips that cut deeply into sales of Mattel's iconic Barbie doll.

In January 2004, a Season 15 episode of The Simpsons saw a similar outcome for the toy store.

Lazarus died March 15 in Manhattan, Michael Goldstein, a close friend who was the company's former chairman, said in a phone interview. "He was the father of the toy business".
