2 killed in possible assassination attempt on Egyptian security official

The Struggle for Egypt's Future

Two people were killed when a bomb exploded under a vehicle in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Saturday in what appeared to be an assassination attempt on the city's security chief, state media reported.

The incident took place in Alexandria, close to the city's corniche, a waterfront promenade, and near hotels and military-owned buildings. The official survived, but one of his lead bodyguards died.

The blast comes just days ahead of Egypt's presidential election, in which President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is virtually certain to be re-elected.

State news agency MENA quoted al-Nemr as saying that two people, a policeman and a driver, were killed in the blast.

The bomb attack struck the convoy of Alexandria's security chief General Mostafa al-Nimr. It was reported that the public prosecutor has ordered an investigation. Attacks in recent years were claimed by Islamic State in a targeted campaign against security forces and civilians.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion. In November, an attack on worshipers at a North Sinai mosque killed more than 300 people and almost a month later nine people were killed at the Mar Mina Church in Helwan, Cairo ahead of Coptic Christian celebrations in December.

Sisi gave the armed forces and police a three-month deadline in November to wipe out the jihadists.
