Uber's self-driving vehicle kills a pedestrian, who is at fault?

The 22-second video shows a woman walking from a darkened area onto a street just before an Uber SUV in self-driving mode strikes her.

Police in USA state of Arizona on Wednesday released a short video of a fatal collision between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian, as investigators probe the accident that has put new focus on the safety of autonomous vehicles.

On Monday, an experimental self-driving Uber auto with a driver on board caused the death of a pedestrian crossing the road in the city of Tempe, Arizona.

Vasquez appears shocked as she sees the pedestrian at the last second. "Our cars remain grounded, and we're assisting local, state and federal authorities in any way we can", the company said in a statement.

Tempe police Sgt. Ronald Elcock said local authorities haven't determined fault but urged people to use crosswalks.

The cause of Sunday's collision, which killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, is under investigation.

The comments contrast with those made by the Tempe police chief, who told multiple media outlets that the pedestrian moved suddenly in front of the vehicle and the crash didn't seem preventable after reviewing footage of the collision.

The video footage inside the cabin of the vehicle shows the driver - identified as Rafaela Vasquez by police - looking down at something before looking up again. "Lidar and radar absolutely should have detected her and classified her as something other than a stationary object". According to police, the vehicle, which also had a human pilot in the front, wasn't speeding, but didn't brake much.

Proponents say that human error is responsible for 94 percent of crashes, and that self-driving vehicles would be better because they see more and don't get drunk, distracted or drowsy. Rajkumar says that while the car's cameras appear to be of little value in the dark, its radar and LiDAR did not seem to behave as designed.

Driverless cars are fitted with sensors that can "see" everything around them, including traffic, road signs, and pedestrians.

Sylvia Moir, the police chief in Tempe, told the San Francisco Chronicle, "It's very clear it would have been hard to avoid this collision in any kind of mode".

An Uber spokesman told the Times that miles-per-intervention was not a safety measurement but instead a rate of system improvement and it could depend on how and where vehicles were operating.

Arizona was once considered a haven for self-driving cars due to its previously lax autonomous policies.

"For us, it's about the well-being of our (safety) drivers, because an incident like this can be jarring, and they're out there every single day", Rick Bourgoise, communications manager with Toyota Research Institute, told USA TODAY.

Uber said in a statement to this news organization that it believed technology "has the power to make transportation safer than ever before", and that it recognized its responsibility to contribute to public safety.
