Lead Lawyer on Russia Probe Resigns Because Trump Ignores Him

It's time for Mueller to produce evidence of wrongdoing by Trump or drop it

Earlier this week, Trump added a new member to his legal team, Joe diGenova, who has described the Russian Federation investigation as a "brazen plot" to exonerate Hillary Clinton and "frame" Trump.

Earlier this week, Trump hired attorney Joseph diGenova to join his legal team, sparking speculation that he may replace Dowd as the lead attorney.

John Dowd stepped down after concluding Mr Trump was increasingly ignoring his advice, the New York Times reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Dowd said he formally resigned Thursday morning.

The president was said to be pleased with Dowd's resignation, as he had grown frustrated with him, particularly over the weekend when Dowd called on the Justice Department to end the special counsel investigation.

"The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime", Trump wrote.

Hours later, Dowd reversed himself, saying he was speaking in his personal capacity and not for the president.

On the rare occasion that a Trump campaign email mentioned the Russian Federation probe, it was only to label the probe a "witch hunt", or a "phony" narrative - a far cry from the suggestion Thursday that Mueller could remove the president from office by overturning the results of the 2016 election, and essentially orchestrate a coup.

Mr Trump has recently begun publicly criticising Mr Mueller by name, rather than just his inquiry.

Osaka beats Kasatkina in Indian Wells to claim 1st WTA title
Naomi Osaka had just won her first WTA title on Sunday, and was understandably finding it hard to put the achievement into words. It seems unlikely: the only sign of her nerves and lack of experience surfaced as she lifted the heavy BNP Paribas Open trophy.

The White House did not return a request for comment from the Daily News.

"DiGenova's being brought in in such a public way and with Dowd leaving at the same time suggests to me that DiGenova intends to take a more aggressive, and quite possibly more public-oriented, defensive posture", Cotter said. Dowd had taken over the lead lawyer role last summer from NY attorney Marc Kasowitz, who has always been by Trump's side.

Dowd's claim signaled the President's legal team plans to rely on an untested theory that is heavily disputed by legal scholars: whether a sitting President can be charged with obstruction of justice or indicted at all.

Dowd is a veteran defense lawyer perhaps best known for producing a report for Major League Baseball on star player Pete Rose's gambling habits. Even if he keeps up his Twitter crusade, however, the president must resist whatever temptation he might possess to fire Mueller and unleash chaos in the capital the likes of which Americans haven't seen since the days of Richard Nixon and Watergate.

His work on behalf of Trump has previously raised eyebrows.

Huckabee said that he does believe there probably is turmoil in the White House "in a good kind of way", adding that people elected Trump to be disruptive.

The tweet appeared to confirm for the first time that the White House knew at the time of Flynn's firing that he had misled the Federal Bureau of Investigation. If you support the Special Counsel, then introduce a bill that will allow the investigation to continue no matter what decision Trump makes on the investigation.
