Cure for Alzheimer's disease remains elusive

An estimated 5.7 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia in 2018, including 220,000 in IL. And that takes a toll on caregivers, to the tune of $11.4 billion in added health care costs past year, according to the report. At present a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's every 65 seconds, the report says. Alzheimer's disease also denoted to be the sixth leading cause of deaths in the U.S which needs to gets restricted anyhow.

"We've known for a long time that CSF tau is increased in Alzheimer's disease, but until this study, we didn't know if tau production was increased or if clearance was decreased", says Chihiro Sato, a member of the Bateman lab and one of the paper's co-first authors. Over a period of 15 years between 2000 and 2015, rate of Alzheimer's related deaths have risen by 123 percent whereas the rate of death due to heart disease has fallen by 11 percent.

Alzheimer's disease is among the most expensive illnesses in the U.S. There's no cure, no effective treatment and no easy fix for the skyrocketing financial cost of caring for an aging population.

This data is been updated in the Alzheimer's Association 2018 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report.

Every 65 seconds, someone in the US develops Alzheimer's dementia.

Along with the increasing costs, the report also found Alzheimer's to be increasingly lethal.

SCOTUS declines to stop state's new Congressional map
But the federal court was being asked to review whether the state Supreme Court itself overstepped and violated the U.S. Judge Christopher Conner and Judge Kent Jordan were chosen for the federal bench by President George W.

Scientists are studing the role of beta-amyloid as a primary culprit in Alzheimer's that gums up the brain, disrupting communication between brain neurons and leading to memory loss.

Approximately two-thirds of caregivers are women; more specifically, over one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters. The report by the Chicago-based Alzheimer's Association estimates that 5.5 million Americans age 65 and older are now living with the disease, 220,000 of them in IL alone.

Forty-one percent of caregivers have a household income of $50,000 or less. However, many older people have such plaques in their brains but do not have dementia.

For example, managed dementia is less expensive to treat because it reduces the chances of missing medication or incurring avoidable costs, Fargo said. "The disease is better managed, there are fewer complications from other chronic conditions, and unnecessary hospitalizations are avoided".

The Alzheimer's Association commissioned researchers at Precision Health Economics to study the potential savings of obtaining an earlier diagnosis. In addition to providing significant medical, emotional and social benefits and facilitating participation in important clinical trials, early diagnosis enables individuals to prepare legal, financial and end-of-life plans while they are still cognitively able to make decisions and share their wishes.

Total payments for health care, long-term care and hospice care for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias are projected to increase to more than $1.1 trillion in 2050 (in 2018 dollars).
