Los Alamitos aims to opt out of California's 'sanctuary state' law

California Town to Challenge State's Sanctuary Law

Hard-working Californians have had enough of their state's liberal policies and "Sanctuary City" laws; with record numbers of people fleeing the west coast as taxes, crime, and homelessness soar.

Though few cities have considered what Los Alamitos has done, there have been divisions over sanctuary laws.

Throughout the night, many in the crowd of more than 150 people from Los Alamitos, Long Beach and other communities engaged in heated debate - sometimes in front of the dais, other times with each other.

But the council voted 4-1 in favor of opting out.

Before it becomes law, the council must approve it again in a scheduled April 16 vote.

"We really don't believe in the sanctuary bill and we would like to take a position to state our case and make it clear to our residents where we stand", Mayor Troy Edgar said.

It may not have been the equivalent of a political natural disaster, but the Los Alamitos City Council decision to exempt itself from the California Values Act, the law restricting local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities, certainly shook the status quo in the nation's largest sanctuary state.

The movement went statewide with Senate Bill 54, an initiative by lawmakers to protect immigrants without legal residency by restricting local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Dog sent overseas by mistake returned to Kansas family
The pet was delivered safely to its owners and all passengers on the flight were compensated, United said. "We chose the fastest option to reunite the dog with his family", said United spokesman Jonathan Guerin.

Homeland Security officials, though, say they're being forced to release drunk drivers back onto the streets because local authorities won't respond to pick them up.

The proposed ordinance might be the first local attempt in California to officially challenge the law, said Kathleen Kim, a Loyola Marymount University law professor who specializes in immigrants' rights and human trafficking.

Los Alamitos is a community of less than 12,000 people, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

"This process is not logical for such a small city", she told the council.

Mary Hanes, a 61-year-old retail clerk having lunch at Katella Bakery & Deli, said the city is being "bullied to get with the program".

"You are subjecting the city of Los Alamitos at taxpayers' expense to lawsuits", said a woman who spoke at the council meeting. I often have disagreements with the laws that are passed in Sacramento. "I am certain we would be facing litigation by the end of the week", Chirco said. "It has nothing to do with immigration - it has to do with legal and illegal".

Pam Rozolis, who has lived in Los Alamitos for more than 48 years, called the exemption proposal a "politically charged move which does not reflect all the Los Alamitos residents". In an email, one member, Shelley Hasselbrink, declined to say publicly how she intends to vote but said it is "such an important topic".

"Why step over the lines of state government to make more trouble when California already has so much to deal with?"
