Engineering firm behind collapsed Miami bridge also designed ME bridges

The bridge that collapsed Thursday was supposed to make the crossing of a perilous seven-lane roadway safer for students and staff at Florida International University in Miami

Police say eight cars were trapped underneath.

10 people died after a footover bridge collapsed near the Florida International University in Miami, USA.

Rescue workers are combing through the rubble of a pedestrian bridge that collapsed onto several lanes of traffic at Florida International University, but hopes of finding more survivors are fading.

The bridge was meant to provide a walkway over the busy street, where an 18-year-old female FIU student from San Diego was killed as she attempted to cross in August, according to local media reports. They had to work carefully because part of the structure was still unsafe.

Carlos Giménez, the Miami-Dade mayor, said he believed MCM workers were conducting a stress test on the bridge when it collapsed, while Florida's junior USA senator, Marco Rubio, tweeted that support cables were being tightened.

"We are stunned by today's tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge", said FIGG Engineering Group, one of the partners involved in the walkway's construction.

Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot said the department was preparing a statement regarding FIGG's work in Maine it would release Friday.

Munilla Construction Management, or MCM, the Miami-based construction management firm that won the bridge contract, had a news release on its website touting the project with FIGG Bridge Engineers, a Tallahassee firm.

Several people were killed, according to NBC 6 South Florida, citing the Florida Highway Patrol.

Florida authorities confirmed to the Miami Herald that the cell phone video posted online late Thursday night was shot inside a state-run office where workers monitor traffic flow. "Now we're feeling enormous sadness, uncontrollable sadness".

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, including those members of our own Bolton Perez & Associates family who were injured yesterday", it said.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board were on the scene early on Friday to investigate why it collapsed.

The accelerated construction method was supposed to reduce risks to workers and pedestrians and minimize traffic disruption, the university had said.

About 950 tons of concrete and steel fell onto a major arterial road next to the campus of Florida International University.

"I think a lot of people aren't going to forget this", he said.

The question as to how many total dead there are remains. He also informed that the investigation has begun to go to the bottom of the incident. "This project accomplishes our mission beautifully", Rosenberg said.

The FIU community, along with Sweetwater and county officials, held a "bridge watch party" on March 10 when the span was lifted from its temporary supports, rotated 90 degrees and lowered into what was supposed to be its permanent position.

"The new UniversityCity Bridge, which was under construction, experienced a catastrophic collapse causing injuries and loss of life", MCM wrote Thursday on Twitter.
