Metropolitan Opera fires James Levine after finding 'credible evidence' of sexual abuse

Acclaimed conductor James Levine was sacked Monday by the Metropolitan Opera after an investigation uncovered credible evidence of "sexually abusive" conduct.

The Met suspended Levine, 74, in December after several accusations of sexual misconduct stretching from the 1960s to 1980s.

Local help with complicated issuesThe Met says in a Monday statement that its investigation found Levine "engaged in sexually abusive and harassing conduct towards vulnerable artists in the early stages of their careers".

The Met said claims its management or board had covered up information of Levine's conduct were unsubstantiated. The Met did not release the specific findings of its investigation, which it said had included interviews with 70 people.

In addition to his 40-year tenure at the Met, Levine was also a former music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Ravinia Festival, the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He also added that an encouragement to innovation is necessary so that solar solutions can be provided to various needs. Trump announced previous year he would withdraw the US from the Paris climate accord.

Three months after multiple men accused James Levine of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Opera officially fired the conductor.

Mr Levine has led more than 2,500 performances at the Met, one of the world's most illustrious opera houses, and is often named among America's top conductors. The alleged victim reported the incidents to police in Lake Forest, Ill., in October 2016.

It has brought forward the appointment of Levine's successor, youthful French Canadian Yannick Nezet-Seguin, who will become music director with the upcoming season.

The allegations detailed in the NYT included assertions that Levine engaged in sexual activity with teenage boy musicians in ensembles he conducted, and go as far back as 1968, when he was a member of the faculty at the Meadow Brook School of Music in MI. The accuser, a man named Ashok Pai, as well as two other men, later spoke to The New York Times about the alleged abuse, which they said dated back to 1968.

News of Levine's suspension came a day after a 2016 police report surfaced, accusing him of sexually abusing a teenager beginning in 1986.
