Shiffrin slaloms to record 42nd FIS Alpine World Cup win in Ofterschwang

Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup- Women's Slalom

She came into the race with a 561-point overall lead over Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, in second place.

The American's only remaining rival, Wendy Holdener, needed a win or second place to maintain her mathematical title chance but the Swiss skier is not among the top-two skiers following her final run.

EagleVail's Mikaela Shiffrin on Saturday celebrated her second-straight overall World Cup title by winning a slalom at Ofterschwang, Germany to also clinch the season slalom title.

Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Proell won her 41st race at age 21, then took a whole season off to care for her father before he died of lung cancer in 1976.

In South Korea, she won Olympic gold in the giant slalom and silver in the combined event, but missed out on a medal in her strongest discipline, the slalom. Holdener finished second in slalom, followed by Sweden's Frida Hansdotter. It was the Norwegian's first career win.

Shiffrin stretched her lead over the only remaining challenger, Petra Vlhova, to 225 points with just the season-ending race at the World Cup finals remaining.

Shiffrin was a clear favorite to successfully defend her maiden overall title when she won the first five races of 2018. It's the end of the season, I can really, really feel it.

"It was a really good fight", said Shiffrin, who celebrates her 23rd birthday March 13.

The slalom specialist has won the World Cup title every season since 2012-2013 apart from 2016 when she was hampered by a knee injury. "The best thing for me now is to have the crystal globe already locked in". The win was her 11th this season, her sixth in eight slaloms.
