Prison time for 'Pharma Bro'

Martin Shkreli's long strange tale could end with a decade in prison

"Pharma Bro" Martin Shkreli cried like a baby before he was sentenced to seven years in prison for defrauding investors.

"I also want to make clear that Mr. Shkreli is not a child", Kasulis said. This is my fault.

Shortly after being found guilty, Shkreli had bragged about the verdict on his YouTube channel, saying that "A few months of jail doesn't scare me".

Shkreli famously used the earnings from his various business ventures to purchase collectables such as an original Enigma machine and a $2m one-off recording of a Wu-Tang Clan album.

Reports state that Shkreli broke down in tears during the sentencing, while a doctor's report noted how Shkreli "possesses a sense of entitlement" and "may have illusions of invincibility". His defence team asked for a fraction of that, 12 to 18 months, but even that would have been quite a concession for Shkreli who bragged, even after being convicted, that he would spend little to no time in prison.

In September 2017, Matsumoto revoked Shkreli's $5 million bail for posting online that he would "pay $5,000 per hair obtained from Hillary Clinton".

A spokesman for the prosecutors declined to comment, but according to Reuters, a lawyer for Shkreli, Benjamin Brafman, said in an email that he was "disappointed by the ruling but still hopeful that the court will find it in her heart to impose a reasonably lenient sentence".

Breaking His Silence, PM Modi Condemns Post-Poll Violence by BJP Supporters
BJP did not react to his post while Tamil Nadu state unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan said these were not the party's views. The crime was seen as another wrong manner in choosing to celebrate, and the criminals were reported and arrested by the police.

"He wants everyone to believe he is a genius, a whiz kid, a self-taught biotech wonder", said prosecutor Jacquelyn Kasulis.

He was convicted last August of lying to his investors and trying to manipulate his company's stock prices.

Judge Kiyo Matsumoto emphasised: "This case is not about pharmaceutical pricing or Mr Shkreli's controversial statements or actions, nor his scientific aptitude". "Not once does Shkreli acknowledge that he lied to investors and committed fraud", prosecutors said.

A federal judge in Brooklyn will have to weigh the conflicting portrayals of the former pharmaceutical company CEO on Friday at his sentencing on a securities fraud conviction. He's been in jail since September of a year ago and is now awaiting sentencing, but the presiding judge has already ordered Shkreli to forfeit about $7.36 million worth of assets.

In addition to serving time, Shkreli also owes money.

Shkreli wasn't being tried for price-gouging sick people on drugs or being a generally irredeemable garbage person, he was being tried for fraud and - forgive us this moment of clarity - we've seen waaaay worse in that department.
