Brazil football player Neymar leaves hospital to spend first phase of recovery

Facebook

The decision was made by Neymar and his team on Wednesday that the best thing would be to go under the knife, especially with the World Cup fast-approaching.

The 26-year-old fractured his metatarsal during PSG's 3-0 win over Marseille on 25 February and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

"The recovery time will depend on the player's evolution".

The operation was declared a complete success.

"An assessment will be conducted in six weeks in order to determine the possible date of his return to training".

The world's most expensive player was operated on by the Brazil national team doctor in Belo Horizonte to fix the fractured metatarsal and sprained ankle he suffered in last weekend's French league match against Olympique Marseille.

Football's showpiece event starts in Moscow on June 14 and Neymar has been told he can expect to be out for three months.

Neymar is ruled out of Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid and now faces a battle to regains sharpness ahead of the World Cup.

The report said that Neymar was initially found to have suffered a minor fracture at the Marseille game and that PSG were shocked when Lasmar declared it was a serious break requiring longer than expected recuperation time.

Following the surgery, however, doctors stressed that there was no friction between PSG and Brazil's federation, the CBF.

Quoted on Brazilian newspaper O Globo's website, he said: "The recovery takes from two and a half months to three months".

"Re-education will begin immediately under the direction of a club physiotherapist".
