Silicon Valley's White Male Panic Takes Root at Google

Google Chrome on smarphone

Wilberg, who recruited engineers for Google's and YouTube's parent company Alphabet, said he was sacked after complaining to upper management about the discriminatory hiring practices, and alleges that other members of his team were either disregarded, transferred or demoted.

"For the past several years, Google has had and implemented clear and irrefutable policies, memorialized in writing and consistently implemented in practice, of systematically discriminating in favor (of) job applicants who are Hispanic, African American, or female, and against Caucasian and Asian men", according to the suit.

Indeed, Wilberg's claim of discrimination against majority groups mimics the culture war around diversity being waged inside Google, where employees advocating for increased diversity have been reprimanded for offending white men.

Google says they will fight the lawsuit and their hiring processes favour the merit of the candidates over their identities. "At the same time, we unapologetically try to find a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles, as this helps us hire the best people, improve our culture, and build better products".

Last month, Tim Chevalier, an ex-software developer at Google, also filed a lawsuit claiming that the company fired him over pro-diversity posts circulated internally.

Toronto police providing update on McArthur investigation
Ciantar said he has friends who did know McArthur and added, "They all said that they never would have suspected him". Navaratnam, 40, went missing in September, 2010, and was the focus of a police investigation called Project Houston.

According to Wilberg, he was sacked past year in November after he talked about the "illegal and discriminatory hiring practices" in the company. The lawsuit alleges that sometime in mid-2017 managers were instructed to stop tracking the number of employees they hired from minority groups and told them to drop all hiring bias based on diversity quotas. Wilberg stated that past year and in 2016, he and other recruiters were told to approve or dismiss candidates based exclusively on whether they were women, black or Latino.

The latest lawsuit alleges that Google asked Wilberg and his co-workers repeatedly to dismiss or approve job candidates only because they were White, Asian, female, Black or Hispanic. But previous year, Wilberg claims YouTube recruiters were told to cancel interviews where the candidate wasn't female, black or Hispanic.

Wilberg's lawsuit targets Google and 25 unnamed Google employees who allegedly enforced discriminatory hiring rules, quoting a number of emails and other documents.

It is important to note that as of 2017, 69% of Google's total workforce was male, a slight decrease from 70% in 2014. However, the Journal cites anonymous sources that corroborate some of Wilberg's claims.
